unable to fast forward Ads on recorded program on Direct TV

Anyone else find they can't fast forward through their recorded programs on Direct TV?

This is a game changer for me if all recordings are like this.  When I first started with pay TV the selling point was ad free.  Now we all pay for TV and that's changed.  I have accepted that and moved to recording my favorite programs, but last night I watched a recorded Law and Order Organized Crime and it said I could not fast forward through ads.  I find this very disturbing.  I pay for internet access and get ads, email ads, cellphone marketing calls, etc. It's insane.  Now I guess I will part ways with Direct TV and stick with streaming Netflix.

Only programs recorded from the sat channels can be FF, those recorded from On Demand can't been this way for years.  DTV has never been ad free as all channels the content providers provide have ads except for the premium channels.

Suspect you were watching an episode recorded from On Demand. The channel controls the ads, not Directv. If you go to the channels own on demand web site that has ads you can't fast forward through also.

As others have noted, if you can’t fast forward, the “recording” is actually a downloaded on demand program, not a recording from a satellite channel. Check the channel of the recording, if it’s 1xxx, that is on demand. For example, if you record a Food Network program, channel 231 is the satellite channel, channel 1231 is on demand.

Thanks all, great forum.   I checked and it was an on Demand  channel. I know what to look for in the for the future , so thanks again.

As for DTV always having ads, unfortunately I am old and believe it or not it was ad free for many years. I even received a reduced rate for a couple of years when ads started,  as  I called and complained that I purchased ad free TV.

thanks again

JFF is right, it's really not that old though. I'm leaving Hulu looking for a streaming service you can fast forward and was planning on joining directv, but it seems like they do it too.

What seems like not long ago, when you recorded something, you could ALWAYS fast forward commercials. That was partially the whole point of it. DVR now seems to be nothing more than another form of "on-demand" unless you pay more money to be able to fast-forward commercials. You're better off digging out your old VCR and recording it on one of those giant tapes just so you can fast-forward through them. This is 2 steps behind in technology, not forward and unfortunately, it's nothing but greed.

Networks have increasingly been disabling FF/REW on On-Demand because it is downloaded from the internet. So works like streaming on their website where they force the ads as well. I am against this, but since it doesn't come from the satellite feed it leaves a loophole for the network to block our FF/REW capability. This counts for the Start from Beginning feature as well as that downloads the program from internet.

As stated before it is only On Demand that uses the internet to stream the programs from the channels On Demand servers can't be FF all programs from the sat channels can be FF.

@ESKIMO7

If it was recorded on the live channel, such as SyFy 244, then you should be able to FF/REW. Only if it was recorded On Demand, such as SyFy 1244, then the capability can be blocked. Also, the restart from beginning feature downloads the program from On Demand so is subject to it as well.

That means if it is not working on a live satellite channel, that would be a technical issue. Not something you lost from U-Verse.

What are the models of boxes you have?

Problem on each one?

Have you tried any troubleshooting at all (such as red button reset)?

Any other issues?

That's shouldn't happen. What show/channel? Are you sure it wasn't recorded from that network's OnDemand channel?

Then you need to replace the receiver as the sat channels can still be FF so there is something wrong with it, there is no way to get On Demand without the receiver being connected to the internet so you are not recording an On Demand version.

DirecTV doesn't need an internet connection except for On Demand options. Either you are clicking something incorrectly, or this is a technical issue. Please answer the other questions for the community to try and help.

I would try and get the problem fixed instead of going straight to switching providers. Otherwise, you will be constantly switching for the rest of your life. And remember, when you started with DirecTV (just like if you upgrade equipment) there is a 24-month service agreement with an early cancellation fee (ECF) valued at $20 for each month remaining.
