Upgrade options for HR24-100
I currently have an HR24-100. Only allows me to record two shows at a time and has limited storage capacity. The channel chaning is also very slow. I also have a HR21 HD receiver. What are the simplest options to upgrade my DVR situation? I was thinking to keep the HR24-100 and add an HR54 for more recording space and tuners, and remove the HR21. Thanks in advance for your input.

If those are your only two boxes than I would upgrade the HR21 to the Genie. HR54 is the 3rd generation and would most likely be what you would get. Comes with a 24 month service agreement. Since you should already have HD and DVR service, this would only expect to add $3 to the monthly bill for Whole Home DVR.
Recordings do not transfer from the replaced box so be caught up first.
HR24 is the last regular HDDVR and is a good model. If the internal 500GB hard drive is too small you can use an external eSATA hard drive. It supports up to a max of a 2TB external. Be aware the internal is disabled while the external is connected.
The HR21 being an earlier model and with a smaller hard drive would be ideal to replace with a Genie. Unlike all DVRs before them, the Genie has 5 tuners so there should be no concerns about recording conflicts. It has a 1TB internal hard drive. Also supports an external eSATA drive, but unlike the HR24 there is no known cap so some have used 12TB and more (though I personally find overkill). Unless it is the revised version (HR54R1) as they stopped including an eSATA port going forward.

SWM = Single Wire Multiswitch that means you need only one coax connected to each receiver and since the HR54 is working you have it. Only the HR54 can have an internet connection via an Ethernet cable or WiFi and it will share it with all DTV receivers so if the HR24 has an Ethernet cable connected to it remove it and reset the HR24. Are you sure that the coax to the HR24 is connected to the SWM splitter?

Yes, that's what I would do.

You're welcome.
One caution, be aware the agents may be pushed to heavily encourage the Genie-2 (HS17). It does have 7 tuners and a 2TB drive. However, it doesn't allow dedicated receivers/HDDVRs so would require all your boxes to be replaced. Plus they removed the eSATA port after the first run of them so doesn't support those external drives if space was still a concern.
Just make sure the order is for what you want and all should be good.

Hi all, I received HR54 and moved the HR24 to another room. I attempted to activate the new HR54 online and it failed. I can still watch TV and record. What I can’t see is any on demand or see the HR24 DVR recorded shows and it doesn’t see the HR24 that I moved. On the HR24 I am able to see the channels and DVR is authorized but no network DVRs are found. When I run a test on the HR24 it mentioned there may be satellite dish alignment problem and it cannot detect a home network. , network not detected. I have not moved the satellite dish in 10 years and both receivers are in the same network.
looking for some next steps.
thank you

You may need to call DTV but they may not be able to activate a third party receiver. Until Whole home is added to your account then you will not able to see the HR24 recordings.

The HR54 was sent by DTV to me. I also have whole home already. It says it’s activated. Perhaps I have a satellite compatibility issue. I’m not sure.

Update. I reset both receivers starting with the HR54 and I removed the Ethernet connection from the HR54 and set it to WiFi. Now I can see both networked DVRs. Not sure if it was the reset or Ethernet but it seems stable for now. Will check in the AM if there are any errors.

They drop shipped you the HR54? That may be a long-term issue.
Upgrading to your first "Genie" has required a tech to make sure your SWM is setup correctly to support the additional tuners (or to install SWM if you had the older multiswitch) and that the communication shares through the coax. It is not intended to share from one box to another through the router.
Be aware the Genie serves as the internet connection for the entire setup. So if the HR24 was wired in, or had a wireless CCK, that will need to be disconnected to avoid conflicts with the Genie. Sorry I didn't note that earlier.

Well perhaps I will have an issue. I’m not clear on the SWM. They asked me what type of connection and dish I had before they agreed to send it. I could not confirm so he looked at his notes and decided to send the box since it was approved to ship direct. I’m not familiar with the SWM. I do know that I had some upgrades with a power adapter that reads “SWM ODU Only” with signal to IRD and power to SIM. One of the coax goes to the HR54 now that was previously plugged into HR24. And the HR24 is now plugged into the coax that was in the old 21 HD box. I also have an error when trying to play on demand “ 1000(DTV) is currently not available”. If I have troubles I may need a service call.

Shannon02. Thanks for the help. No Ethernet to the HR24, it seems to be a wifi connection or perhaps it’s seeing the HR54. The HR24 is connected to the splitter, this line previously went to a H21 box. I just used the same connection for the HR24. The same splitter feeds a coax to SWM power supply to the HR54. Looks like it’s from “out” from the DC power pass of the splitter. Any idea why I have a “1000 DTV is not available” error?

I'm assuming that if the HR54 hasn't been activated yet, that is what is causing the problems. The HR24 doesn't have WiFi built in so it needs a external box but it is getting the internet connection from the coax from the SWM splitter via the HR54.

Shannon02 & Juniper. Thanks for your help. All seems to be working fine now with a few tweaks. Called DTV and they pinged the boxes and the on demand works now. You are both awesome.

You are welcome. The only thing the CSR's can do is refresh your account authorizations that you can also do from your DTV account.
