Since the VCR cannot tune into digital channels, you will need to use a cable box or DTV converter box. Try connecting your TV service to the box, then connect the video output of the box to the VCR, and finally connect the VCR to the TV. Then set the VCR to the aux input and you can change channels on the box or record from there.
The convertor box is only for older TVs that cannot pull the new digital channels from regular antenna (rabbit ears or newer styels) since they don't have a digital tuner built in. This doesn't matter for VCR recording from DirecTV. This is because the VCR is not tuning to the channel but just what video/audio signal is sent after DirecTV has converted it.

Hey, @Groet1. Check the steps below on how to setup a VCR to your Genie device:
- Use Composite AV cables (red, white, yellow) to hook receivers to VCR
- Run the AV cables from the output on the receiver to the input on the back of the VCR
- Most VCRs have AV inputs in the front or back (usually labeled Line 1 or Line 2)

What DirecTV satellite box do you have? Not all of them have the composite video and analog audio outputs to feed to a VCR.
