What do I need to get 4K?
long-time (25 years) DirecTV satellite customer. Upgrading my media room to a 4k-capable projector, and looking at updating my DirecTV equipment along with it to allow for viewing 4k content from satellite. Current equipment is the standard Genie + Genie Minis. Main Genie receiver is NOT in the media room currently. Main receiver is a Genie Gen 3, HR54-500 which I believe is 4k-capable. My Genie Minis are C41-500 and a C61-500. Is the C61-500 4k capable, or do I need to upgrade one of the older C41-500 to a 4k-capable Genie mini?

To watch 4K content, you must upgrade one Mini Genie to a 4K client, @djbrown_rotonews. Your current HR54 server processes 4K data but cannot output it directly, and neither your C41 nor C61 models support 4K resolution. You will need to replace one with a Genie Mini 4K (C61K) or a Gemini (C71KW) connected directly to your media room projector. The HR54 will stay in its current room to power the system. Please ensure your projector supports HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. We'll send you a DM so our specialist can review your account and find the best options. Kharl, DIRECTV Community Team

HR54 is part of a 4K setup. However it was too far into production when the requirements changed, so cannot provide 4K to the TV itself.
You need to upgrade one of your Mini Genie Clients to a 4K Mini, which is the C61K.
Alternatively, you can upgrade to the Genie-2 (HS17) with a 4K setup. This has 7 tuners to share with all Clients, 2TB Hard Drive, and supports up to 2 of your 4K Clients using a 4K channel at the same time. (HR54 has 5 tuners, 1TB, and only 1 TV at a time can use a 4K channel, and only 3 clients can be in use at one time in general as keeps 2 tuners to itself for PiP).
The downside of the Genie-2 is only allows Clients, so you could never have HDDVR/HD non-DVR receivers, no Picture in Picture as Clients can only use a single tuner each, recordings from your HR54 do not copy over, and the eSATA port is removed (after their 1st run) so external hard drives are no longer supported.
Whether you upgrade a C41 to C61K or go the Genie-2 route (possibly upgrading 2 clients with it depending on what is available), it will come with a 24 month service agreement. There is no charge for 4K itself, so should not be any change to your monthly bill (unless you had an old rare special ongoing free promotion for HD and/or DVR service)
TV (or projector) must support HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, and 60 FPS. Also TV is required to be there for the install.
