Why doesn't Directv realize the mistake of removing "native mode"?

As an engineer in broadcasting transmission for over 30 years,  I just shook my head when Directv customer service and their  techs told customers complaining about a 1 or 2 second delay switching between SD and 720P and 1080i  to turn off native mode and force the box to convert everything to 1080i.  Then 2 years ago, a software update took away the "native mode" option, so I bet 99%+ of Directv viewers are watching Fox, ABC, ESPN and the Bally (formerly Fox) regional sports channels in 1080i  instead of 720p,  and instead of 60 full pictures per seconds, are seeing INTERLACED pictures -- 60  HALF PICTURES per second (made of alternating odd (1,3,5...) and even  (2,4,6..)  rows of pixels.   The combtooth edges and bluriness of interlaced video has been added into a clean signal by the Directv box no longer  passing the signal "as broadcast"

If you have an older receiver, the native mode setting can still be utilized in Settings. In newer receivers, you can click the "FORMAT" button to toggle through the resolutions. I assume you have the HR54 or HS17 receiver, which does not have a front screen panel that allows the change of resolutions as well as modes.
