Yamaha avs1080 pair with Directv remote.
Purchased new soundbar and tried every code, I can get volume control but can't get it to turn off and on.

The RC7X remotes are not made to turn on/off any soundbars/A/V receivers, only HDMI-CEC may do that.

Yes, use HDMI control (CEC) to do this.
