Contacting DirecTV by phone
Does DirecTV have a phone number to contact them? I've been waiting for chat contact response for over 30 minutes. This is ridiculous.

That was some bad information from the agent. If multiple agents claimed it was a "rental" charge, then I would consider a BBB complaint. DIRECTV STREAM boxes are customer owned, but traditional DirecTV (satellite) the boxes are owned by the company.
Boxes may still have been needed. This is because the app is not compatible with all "smart" TVs. And those that it is, do not work as well. But you have the option of a different streaming box (Roku, Firestick, Apple TV, etc.) where you don't need specifically the one made by DIRECTV STREAM.
After acquiring DirecTV several years go, AT&T has recently spun off the TV services to a new co-owner. A lot does seem to bein flux because of that. Hopefully the knowledge of the agents will improve as the waters settle from this new transition. Time will tell.
