Directv Box Versus Competitive Devices

I'm looking into Directv as a replacement for my Uverse. Has anyone used the Tirectv box and compared the picture to a Roku or Amazon Fire? I'm wondering if the Directv box is proprietary, and accessing their own streaming service, is there a picture advantage of any kind? Or are are devices similar?

Hello @ComfortablyNum, we are happy to know that you are thinking on DIRECTV Stream services.

With our DIRECTV Stream box, you can access thousands of apps like Netflix and more on Google Play, Search using our voice remote with Google Assistant, enjoy a traditional live TV channel guide. You can review the details of our DIRECTV Stream device http://sm.att.com/17f7e796

The DirecTV box is "semi-proprietary".  It is convention hardware and runs Android TV.  However, it has been customized to start up directly into a version of the DirecTV Stream app specifically targeted at the box.  The app acts as the box's home screen (you launch other apps through it).  Also, the remote is more similar to a cable remote than those of the Roku or FireTV - it has a numeric keypad and a number of other "extra" buttons relative to those devices' remotes.  The combination lets it provide a more "cable-like" experience than you would get with a commodity streamer - you get channel numbers (that you can enter) and buttons that provide shortcuts to things that require navigating menus on the other devices.  (The remote doesn't provide as many buttons as the U-Verse remote does and some things still are accessed through menus.)  It also has voice command that is integrated into the app (which the voice features on the others aren't).  I haven't done an A/B on picture quality, but I haven't noticed a significant difference - the service's picture quality seems good on all the supported devices.

Why are you thinking of switching?  Uverse has significantly more channels.

I'm looking at switching because Uverse is now $145 per month. I'm able to get a $20/month discount but $125/month is still pretty high. I've spoken to several customer service people who make no guarantees as to how long Uverse will be around. It's not offered anymore to new subscribers and I think that says a lot regarding it's future. I like Uverse but it's not worth $1500 per year IMO.

For the price, check out YouTube TV. If it was not for the grandfathered subscription, I would drop the service.
