How to switch from Satellite to streaming can comparison

I have been a customer of DirectTV Satellite forever, but an sick and tired of losing signals when there is severe weather, so I want to switch to streaming, but DirectTV sales is not helpful in making the switch. I'm inclined to use another streaming service, e.g. Hulu, Sling, YoutubeTV, if I can't get this resolved easily.  I have called customer service several times, to no avail, including just now.  DIrectTV customer service is horrible.

Can someone help me decide if this is worth doing, and how DirectTV Satellite compares to their streaming service?

I tried to sign up for streaming to test, but it won't accept my address, which is the same address used for my satellite account. I hate directTV.

Where I live, USPS doesn't recognize our address, as we have to goto the Post Office to pick up our mail, and thus if DirectTV using USPS to cross check addressed to validate them, it will not work. We have had issues with some others for same reason. It is a nightmare to resolve. Hoping they can overwrite this...

I was not a fan of DTVsat. Always list signal, then lost pay for view , then got only Spanish channels! Switched to cable and DTV charged me $400 contract fee even though I never signed a contract. Tried talking to even their VP with no luck. Swore I’d never go back after they forced payment via a collection agency!

However 10 years later DTV stream premier looks good. Eliminates two homes at $600 vs $150 stream for both.

I hope and trust that if I end up moving to stream, I won't have a cancelation fee.

You want to know the difference between Directv Satellite service and Directv Streaming Service.  The are not many differences the channel lineups are basically the same but you do lose out on the NFL Network and the NFL Sunday Ticket.  There may be a few other channels that the streaming lineup does not have but it is very few so I would check the channel lineup before signing up. You will no longer have to pay for DVR fees and Box fees as there are none of those with the streaming service.  Depending on what you are going to use to stream if you are planning to use Roku or Firestick you lose the ability to change directly to a channel as you would have to go into the guide and scroll through the channels to find the one you want.  Also accessing the DVR takes a little more work.  But if you were planning to use the Directv Streaming Device then you would really see no difference in the way that it works from the satellite version as it basically works like your Sat. receiver without the dish.  But you do get the ability to download apps such as Netflix, youtube, etc...  Plus there are no contracts so if you are not happy with the service you can cancel at any time.  Hope this helps answer any questions that you were looking to get answered.

Understand these are two different services. If you cancel directv satellite you will be liable for whatever are the standard cancellation charges for the services you have. You can't "transfer" from one to the other.

Not sure why you're having issues signing up for DirecTV Stream. You can have both services at the same time while you evaluate the Stream service. Just use a different email address when signing up for DirecTV Stream. We have both for a couple of months before deciding to cancel Satellite and keep Stream. No regrets!

My address issues are unique to my location, but causes problems often. Hopefully a real person can help me.

I was wondering if the recommendation engine on DirectTV streaming is better than satellite version, which is non-existent.  I like YoutubeTV's recommendation engine.

Constructive, thanks, but you are not able to help force my address into your system, or are you?

  • when I travel, can i watch as if i were at home?
  • when do recordings expire and is there any limit to how much i can record?

1. I haven't used either the DirecTV Satellite or DirecTV Stream "recommendation engine", so can't answer that question.

2. Yes. We RV with a Roku device in our trailer and can view our DirecTV Stream channels and recordings as long as we have decent internet service.

3. New subscribers get unlimited DVR recordings that can be saved for 9 months.

@Judo

DTV charged me $400 contract fee even though I never signed a contract.

Everyone starts DirecTV with a 24 month service agreement. It is valued at $20 for each month remaining. It is in the fine print of all advertisements, in the order confirmation emailed, and in the details that you sign on the handheld when tech does the work. So multiple ways to make sure you are informed, even if an agent you spoke with neglected (accidental or on purpose) to mention it.

So if you started DirecTV and then canceled with 20 full months remaining, you were billed the Early Cancellation Fee (ECF) correctly. However, if that ECF was for any time after the initial 24 months, it depends on what the service agreement was for if it was correct or not (i.e. warranty replacement activated as upgrade in error).
