Charged for returned equipment

I had to cancel my U-verse because AT&T could not get it working after it was out for over a week.  Now they are charging me for not returning equipment that I returned.  This is even after I called and provided the tracking number from UPS. AT&T customer service is absolutely garbage, and now they are trying to extort $170 from me. This a is very shady business practice.

How do I fix this matter? I'm sick to death of sitting on hold, and not having the problem fixed.

@Daredelvis   Be forewarned, if certain people get your help request, it will come back as an email response, not the blue envelope.  Would be a disposable email @att.com. Smiley Surprised

I'm having the same problem. After two billing cycles, I wasn't charged for the modem so I threw away my reciept from UPS. I got my bill last month and now I'm being charged a non return charge of $170. Have you gotten you issue resolved? ATT is no help and told me that there is nothing I can do and I will have to pay for this modem that I returned.

Good luck getting it fixed.  It took me countless phone calls and over two hours total on the phone to get them to admit they had the returned equipment.  Here is my story.  I had U-verse for over three years.  I canceled AT&T U-verse after they my service was out for over a week.  I had countless calls with their technical service, and two visits by technicians (I had to take time off of work to meet them). Even with all of that AT&T could not get my service up and running.

I canceled my service, and dropped the equipment off at the UPS store.  I was issued a receipt from the UPS store, and I thought that was the end of it.  After being surprised by the $170 unreturned equipment bill, I called AT&T.  I provided them the tracking number from the receipt (turns out that is an AT&T tracking number, not a UPS tracking number).  They assured me everything was OK.  Well, it wasn’t.  They said they had no record of my return.  These are the steps I took.

  1. Posted on this forum, and received empty promises.
  2. Called my toothless cable advocate in my city (this did help).
  3. Went to the UPS store to check the tracking number. Guy at desk says this happens all of the time with AT&T.  They wait until they have enough units in, and ship them all at once.
  4. Spent over two hours in the phone with AT&T “Office of the president” customer service. I feel that is a total garbage (can't say bee, ess) feel good name.
  5. AT&T finally admitted they had the returned equipment (I had their tracking number. That should have been the end of it.)

My feelings after this are that I will never voluntarily do business with AT&T again.  You as a consumer have no recourse, and your time means nothing to them.  It is my opinion that through their incompetence, they tried to extort $170 from me.  There is no downside to them doing this, and you have no rights.

What I have done and what I suggest you do.

  1. Contact whatever worthless regulatory agency in your city or state (both, if you ask me). Make a formal complaint, and you suddenly might get a call.
  2. I have written my worthless congressman. I don’t know where AT&T gets off trying to steal money from me (I had their tracking number, it was obviously their fault!!), but if you don’t give in to their extortion, they can slam your credit.
  3. I would recommend you go to reddit, and post your story on cordcutters. Maybe it will get some legs, and that will help you get a response.

Good luck.

Trust me I can relate to your matter.
Of all companies ATT&T makes the most errors and ends up charging the customer money they don't owe.
I also returned equipment in its proper packaging and dropped off at UPS.
Not they have me in collections for non return for $711. Plus ATT&T continued my service with no equipment in the house.
Ive disconnect the service after the one year discount ended. Now they say I owe $197 for service I never had. It's time consuming and my blood pressure goes up each time I have to try to resolve an issue with them. It's an on going problem year after year with this Company. They make so many mistakes it's causing me so much emotional stress on me after having had Cancer twice. It's unbelievable..

I finally got my issue resolved after about 4 months. Someone from the att
contacted me regarding my forum post and settled everything. After they
credit my account I canceled my service and had another company but me out
of the att contract. They are seriously the worst phone/tv company I've
ever felt with!

Att&t is causing my blood pressure to rise. It's not a joke! This company makes so many mistakes that is so time consuming just trying to resolve each one.
Yes, I too returned equipment in its Att&t package and dropped it off at UPS. Now months latter $711 is reflecting on my credit as owed.
Tears came down
my face and now I'm physically exhausted just from attempting to resolve another mistake on their behalf. I'm a 58 year old christian woman who has recovered with cancer twice within a ten year period. My blood pressure goes up each time I have to resolve an Att&t mistake. Plus, I called to cancel service after the one year promotion expired and returned the equipment and still they had my service activated after it's supposedly disconnected and no equipment in the house, but their charging me $197 for service. Att&t has ruined my credit.
Now I'm so sad and depressed that I can't even sleep at night.
Only God is my witness. Why would I want to keep their equipment and latter be charged and have my credit ruined? I might have to sent them to court. This company makes more mistakes than any other company. Now I have to wait 10 to 15 business days for them to confirm my returned equipment. Hopefully they have human compassion and will make efforts to stop changing people for their unprofessional errors.

Yes, it's so real!
ATT&T is one of the worst companies to deal with.
Just about everyone I know has had problems with ATT&T
This Corp. makes so
many mistakes it's unbelievable. The worst part is I've recovered twice from cancer and this issue has caused me so much stress. ATT&T has me in collections and it's reflecting on my credit report. My credit score has gone down thanks to them. I might have to take them to small claims court if this isn't resolved very soon. My credit means everything to me.
There's no reason for anyone to want to keep their equipment.
ATT&T doesn't realize the damage they've caused clients lives by their constant mistakes..

The same exact thing has happened to me and I am being extorted for boxes that I returned. I have never missed a payment with att cell phone service in 10 years with them but they dont care. They ruined my credit from a 760 to a 600. This is criminal

Thanks for your comment. It’s very upsetting for At&T Uverse to jeopardize my credit score. After battling cancer twice -means rebuilding my credit due to past medical bills. Finally years latter my credit numbers have improved. Sadly to be charged for equipment that had been returned in its original box to UPS. To add, giving AT&T all confirmed information and paying them $197. as agreed and to be treated as a non-existing great customer. I’ve been an AT&T customer when the 1st cell phones came out. At&T caused so much stress on my health that after so many disappointing customer service calls, my blood pressure when so high I almost got a heart attack. I started sweating extremely and my chest tightened. Afterwards I finally gave up.
To think I never been late after so many years.
My heart goes out to all who’ve endured similar misfortune from AT&T.

It is now 2018 and the same thing is happening to me... how do they stay in business? You are exactly right, they don't care and your time means nothing to them, as I am now going on 6 months. I will add that they lie.

I have been dealing with this for the last couple months.

It's 2018 and I sent my equipment back in 2015. I've talked to numerous people and finally found someone to take the charges off.  But she said it wouldn't reflect on my bill for at least five days.  So I call back a week later and they never did it.

I cannot return equipment twice or go back 3 years to prove it.

I mean good grief,  i'm trying to pay off a 3 year old bill AND remain a customer with them AND bring them another new AT&T line.

I'm so sick of dealing with big companies and not getting personal care or attention.  These rich corporations will nickel and dime you to death.
