Do I have to plug the DVR into the Uverse gateway box?

Do I have to plug the DVR into the Uverse gateway box, or can I plug it into my home router, which is then connected to the gateway box?

Here's my situation.  Several years back, I dropped gigabit ethernet cables into every room in the house.  Everything runs back to a little network connection cabinet where the line comes in from outside.  The Uverse gateway lives in the cabinet, and the DVR ethernet cable plugs into the gateway.

The problem is that the cabinet is not located where the TV is.  We're using a wireless receiver to get the signal to the TV, but I'd like to plug into the TV directly.

I tried hooking the DVR into the router, but it didn't work, but I was hoping that there was a trick to make it function.

If not, I can run a second network cable down to the TV and do it that way, but I'm lazy and would rather not.

I was going to reply - Try it see if it works - Looks like it did not.

It is best to connect the DVR to the RG cat5 (always has been) because it carries all the load in both directions - All programming & playing recording & managing recording.

Also, not good to put both TV and internet on the same leg. May flood the switch/router.

It is good that you can run a new cable. You only have to do it once. You will watch for  ..  How long?

UPDATE

I went ahead and ran a second Cat5 cable.  It was just cleaner that way.

All is well, it's working fine.
