Does HDTV need new Uverse equipment?

We've just purchased an HDTV.  Our old TV is one of those big square ones and we haven't had UVerse HD.  Will we need new equipment from AT&T or will the current boxes handle the signal?  Do I need to upgrade our package in any way?  Thanks for your help!

All boxes are HD ready and can transmit same.  You will need to add HD ($10 mnth) if you currently have U-300 or smaller package.  U-450 includes HD.

em380tex - You could use your new TV without making any changes, but it would look worse than your old one. You do not need to change the U-verse box.

You do need to do three things -

Subscribe to the HD tech package ($10 mo)

Connect TV Via HDMI or component cables

Set the aspect ratio in the system options in u-verse to one of the HD selections. When you do that be sure to move the cursor to accept the change before you press OK.

You can skip the first step, but, you should at least call for a free trial month. It is critical that you do the last two steps to take advantage of your new TV. It will allow you to fill the screen with an SD picture (which you may enjoy as much as HD @ $10 less) & be ready for free HD trials so that you can compare & decide.

Your current Uverse TV equipment will handle HD no problem, although the connection between the the Uverse TV Receiver and the TV will use a different cord.

As well, if you do not currently subscribe to the U-450 package you will have to pay an additional $10 per month for access to the HD channels.

As the previous posters have said, you need to connect this TV a new way, using either HDMI or Component cables.  If using Component cables, you have to set the aspect ratio manually, HDMI takes care of that for you.

I have not subscribed to the HD Technology Fee, although I have two HD televisions.  Wife would rather record SD and have more DVR capacity (approximately 3 times the capacity if recording SD vs HD), and it saves me $10+tax /month, so...

DH saw no need for HD either but once he saw a football game (and the pre-game show) in HD, he was a believer.

Thanks for the advice.  Contacted AT&T to switch to HD.  Waiting on the change.  You were correct...right now the picture is worse than our old dinosaur tv.  Hoping for big improvement when HD begins.  Thank you for your help!

This is good to know.  I was just about the search for a channel listing.  Now I know to just add 1000.  Thank you!
