if your talking about uverse equipment you have 10 days from the service change/disconnect to avoid $150 penalty. you may ask someone at home to return your equipment just bring your account number
Can you return U Verse rented equipment to a AT&T company owned store?
This is one more reason why I depise the aspect of renting my modem, or gateway from ANY internet provider, it is often times a pain in the rear to return it, it often gets "lost" when shipped back, and they provide nearly no time to return it before they try and charge you...
AT&T PLEASE LET US BUY APPROVED MODEM AND GATEWAYS FOR U VERSE INTERNET SERVICE...this is one of the main reasons I have remained with regular DSL service from you.
@skeeterintexasI wasn't suggesting but asking if it was possible, thanks for giving me the answer. One more reason why I won't be "upgrading" to U Verse over old DSL any time soon.
AT&T really needs to allow consumers to buy AT&T approved modems and gateways for U Verse service. Even if we can only purchase them directly from AT&T.
Unless they force you to. I say that only because a few years ago, my sister had ATT DSL and they came through her neighborhood (Dallas) and transitioned everyone over to Uverse.

I have old 768/128k ADSL, the only way I would be OK with the transition to U Verse, and not have a problem is if they did what they have done with some other customers I know about..where they simply place your current account on the ADSL2+ (U Verse) shelf in the DSLAM this way you do NOT pay a gateway modem rental fee, and they don't change any other account parameters....other than that as much as I dislike Charter I might be switching to them...after all they do offer 60/4 Mbps for 39.99mo for one year, I currently pay 39.00/mo for my sloooow service with AT&T but it is the everyday price so I don't have to play the call and get a new promotion every year game.

This is actually incorrect, you have 21 business days to do so.
As long as we receive the equipment within 21 business days, no charge is created. If you return it within 90 days, I believe that charge is waived.

AT&T equipment cannot be returned to a ATT store. Please do not suggest that option.
