HDMI Cable
Hi folks. I purchased a 50' HDMI cable for a 2nd TV but it says no signal. When I use the cable from the 1st TV, it works fine, so it's obviously the cable I bought. It's an RCA HDMI from Menards that says its good for video and digital audio. Can you suggest where I should get the right cable? Needs to be 50'. THANKS!

A shorter cable? 50' HDMI cable is in itself problematic. Unamplified runs of more than 25' usually have issues.

Hey Jeff, thank you for getting back to me! So this is the exact message that appears. Still possible it's too long a cable seeing this?

Hi Otto. Thanks for responding.
2nd TV is a Sony Bravia, about 11 years old. But I hooked up the Sony to the receiver on my main TV (using much shorter, supplied cable) and it worked fine.
And after reading your response, I hooked up the 50' cable to the main TV and receiver, and it was a no go.
So looks like the 50' cable is the culprit.

As OttoPylot said, you're getting an HDCP error; obviously it sort of works (you get a display), but the Receiver is unable to be satisfied that the TV won't record the digital signal that the receiver is sending it. Timing on HDCP can be sort of tight and any thought that something might be trying to circumvent HDCP protection can cause an issue (including weak signals due to a long cable). Assuming the TV is new enough to do HDCP (and it should be if only 11 years old). A better cable might work [please note that better and more expensive do not correlate well... Monster Cables are expensive, but not that good; there are much better cheaper cables to be had; what you would need would be higher gauge.] A much shorter cable might work well.

Thank You !
I'll try a shorter cable; I may be able to make it work.
You mentioned quality vs price-Any suggestions on a brand?

I don't have a favorite brand. I buy them off websites like monoprice.com

Thanks for the tips, Otto!
Want to catch ballgames on my deck, so running the cable right from the box to the TV by the patio door.
I can try to make a shorter (25' ?) cable work.
New here, where can I find the forums you mentioned?

Yea 50feet is just way too long for unboosted hdmi cable to stay consistent especially with how picky uverse boxes are for hdcp compliance.
Have you considered getting a wireless set top box?
Or running a cat 5e/cat 6 cable to the 2nd TV. The ethernet from gateway to uverse box should be fine to 100 feet without any problems. And further with slightly more problems/complexity. Then you'd only need a regular 3-6 foot hdmi to connect to tv.
Also with 50feet how are you getting the remote signal back to the uverse box?

Thanks Max!
It works just be a situation of putting in a ballgame, so be need for a lot of remote action.
Curious-You think 25' would work?

@FireDan18 not sure what you mean by ballgame. 25foot hdmi should be fine assuming it's a high enough quality and thick enough cable. But unless you gateway is located somewhere difficult to run cable to a 50-100foot ethernet cable is a lot simpler and then the box is next to the tv.
Edit-also
Here's a link explaining hdmi max lengths.
https://www.cablematters.com/Blog/HDMI/how-long-can-an-hdmi-cable-be
Also I assumed your set top box is connected to gateway via ethernet. If its connected via coax cable you would still want to use ethernet for the longer run or it gets more complicated.

Ahhhh, thanks for that suggestion, Max! I'll try that. And thanks for the info.
Sorry-I meant my intention is to put the 2nd TV (is on a mobile stand) by the patio door so I can sit out and watch a ballgame.

Hey Otto, lol I probably am overthinking it.
Yes baseball games. The White Sox are on NBC Sports, which is part of my Uverse package here in Chicago.

If you decide to go the watching it online via a streaming stick method also know if you happen to have tmobile cell service they give MLB tv for free as a perk. For a temporary setup like that though I'd still just measure the distance from the gateway to where I wanted tv and buy that length of cat 5e or cat 6 patch cable and plug in box with a regular length hdmi cable. Probably coat less than $20bucks. Super simple to setup and take down. And since its temporary it works even if you don't have an extra ethernet port on gateway to spare.
