King George

I dont like paying $10 per month for a receiver. Can I buy a receiver from AT&T?

If not, Can I buy a TV receiver at a best buy or other electronic store? Will AT&T allow me to use it?

As per the Terms of Service, all Uverse accounts require the use of AT&T LEASED equipment and as such incur a monthly lease fee.

That sucks. I guess that must be on the 100 pages, size 2 font writing that nobody reads.

Ace Master, if you dont mind helping me understand, Why is this receiver so expensive? Comcast receivers are only $2.99 per month.

https://www.att.com/legal/terms.uverseAttTermsOfService.html

Section 6, paragraph A.

If you do not purchase the Equipment from AT&T, you agree to pay a monthly equipment fee for the Equipment as part of your purchase of the Services for the duration of your receipt of the Services. Equipment fees may be included in your monthly charge for the Services or be charged separately (different taxes and surcharges may apply to the equipment fees, Service fees, and/or the equipment fee portion of the Service fees).

Haven't a clue about pricing.

I was just wishing that equipment should be complementary for paying your channels.

What gets me is if you don't return the STB or gateway and they make you pay for them you still can't use them. Even tho you bought them out right.

I don't see why you say you are screwed. A free dvr and $10 for each additional one. TWC gives a free box without a dvr. $16 for a dvr. Additional boxes are $12-$27 each.

You should be able to buy them.  The FCC was working on a law that would allow you to buy third party set top boxes with ISP's forced to provide software to allow them to work (although it may have only applied to cable and not IPTV), but under new administration who knows if it'll actually ever get passed and implemented.  It's even more obnoxious when under the new software they show ads for themselves and others.

@skeeterintexas that's a good article explanation.  Although that was before the presidential election, so things may have changed even more now.
