Do you mean what att calls mode buttons - ATT - TV - DVD - AUX?
I believe the S-10 remote attempted to mimic other TV providers remotes & provide a degree of universal support. Worked for some, not for others.
The new s-20 steps back from universal support & does not include mode buttons, as you point out. The S-20 manual does say that the remote is intended for supporting watching u-verse, not other devices. It does improve the support for aux sound over the S-10. The change may work for you, or not.
One anachronizm is - the S-20 still has a tv/video button. Since there is no TV mode button, it should work all the time on the TV. But, there are two methods of supporting input selection on TVs. If the TV uses multiple presses of the button to navigate the input menu, it may work.
If the TV input menu requires arrows buttons to navigate the input menu, it cannnot work because those buttons do not exist on the s-20.
If you need an s-10 to continue your current support, they may be available on e-bay or thrift stores.
