Residential Gateway and surge protection

When my UVerse equipment was installed (completed by two different technicians) I was told by both technicians not to connect my Residential Gateway to a surge protector, a surge protector intereferes with the signals in the RG. If a surge should occur and the RG is lost, who is responsible for replacement cost of the RG?

I know some surge protectors have in/out phone line surge protection and I can see where that would be a problem but I can't see where AC protection would cause a  problem. I have whole house surge protection plus a surge protector that my PC and Gateway plug into and have never had a problem.

I have my RG plugged into a surge protector and I have had no problem for going on 10 years.  The only thing a surge protector does is prevent power surges.  They do not send out any signal so I would not worry about it.
