Saving recorded programs

I'm a big fan of several TV series, among them 'Street Outlaws' and 'American Pickers', both of which I record. I'm afraid I'm eventually going to run out of DVR memory. I'm wondering if there's a way I can transfer these programs to my computer. I have no problem with storage space there, 2 terabytes. I noticed that there's a female USB port on the front of my DVR. Is that to facilitate a memory stick? I've not seen anything anywhere about the USB port.
