transfering recorded show & programs after replacing (updating) receiver (DVR) unit.
Is there a way to transfer recorded shows from old receiver (DVR) unit to a new unit when replacing (updating) receiver (DVR) unit?
If so, where can I find instructions or explanation on how to do it?

Well...yes and no.
It *may* be possible with a TV card in a computer, if those things still exist. I came to U-Verse in 2008. Before then, I had a computer hooked up to a basic cable connection. I recorded a TV show onto a DVD. I ran the coax cable into the back of my computer and used the TV card in the computer to record the show in real-time, like a VCR. I then used some program (I forget which) to remove commercials and add chapters, similar to a DVD.
Back in 2002, a friend made a video CD (a CD...VHS quality) via a home-brewed whole-home DVR. This dude was a major nerd. He essentially had whole-house DVR *with* the ability to burn DVD to the same home server as his saved shows. I think it was MythTV or something similar.
If it's still possible, expect it to be very time-consuming.
Is it illegal? Well, was it ever illegal to record shows to VHS for private home viewing?

It is not possible to access the contents for the purposes you’re requesting of the DVR without violating the ToS. I’m in agreement this is not ideal, but it’s what we got.
BTW, what’s wrong with your existing DVR?
