Vap2500

How far can the Vap2500 be from the modem/router and still keep a signal? I added an apartment addition onto my home and cannot get a good signal or cannot get a signal at all at times. The tv will continually freeze up and go out. I was thinking maybe I could run a long Ethernet cable and extension cord to my attic to bring it closer to the wireless receiver in the apartment. Has anyone experienced this kind of issue before or have any thoughts?

I have considered streaming services but I really like U-Verse (I switched from Spectrum about 6 years ago when fiber became available and I have not had any issues at all until now) or maybe it’s the fact that it is hard wired and that’s all I have ever known and used. I considered keeping U-Verse on the main side and getting streaming services for the apartment but I was told I could not do that because it’s the same address.

I am really torn over what to do. Maybe I can keep U-Verse and get some other non AT&T streaming service over there.

Thank you for taking the time to help me with this!

One option is to use the apps (HBO Max, ESPN, etc) instead of a U-Verse receiver. Unfortunately, this may not be ideal for all channels, since many of them (like Peacock and Paramount+) don't have a free option...or if they do, it's limited.

Firestick has a U-Verse app, which is similar to the mobile app.

I believe the wireless receiver has an option Ethernet directly to the gateway.

You certainly could get a streaming service (such as DirecTV Stream) for the apartment. I don't see why you couldn't. I don't believe they care what your address is, other than for billing and RSN purposes.

Thanks so much for your reply. I did not realize U-Verse had an app on the Firestick. I have a couple of Firesticks so I will try that out and see what I can get.

Yes, you can plug an Ethernet cable into the wireless receiver and I had not thought to run it directly to the gateway instead of running it to the Vap2500. That would be much simpler to do.

I could kick myself for not running the appropriate wires when building the addition. My husband asked me several times about it and I thought if the internet wireless signal was strong we would be good for anything we needed to do over there. Ha! That was before I realized what exactly the Vap2500 was used for. Honestly (go ahead and laugh! 🤣) I thought the Vap2500 was the router up until about a week ago.

Live and learn! If the above ideas don’t work out  I will reach out to AT&T again about a separate streaming service.

Thanks again!

The VAP2500 is basically the "bridge" between the gateway and the wireless receiver(s). In basic terms, it allows the wireless receiver(s) to "talk" to the gateway.

And I believe the VAP can be moved closer to the receiver.

And now I'm second-guessing myself on that app. @skeeterintexas ...is this app still an option? I do have one rarely-used TV where it was a thing.
