The content is in HD, but the DirecTV Stream box, Roku, Fire Stick devices will upconvert the content to 4K, if set to do so, and your TV is capable of 4K.
You can get 4K content from some of the apps, like HBO Max, that are on the DirecTV boxes, but not from any of the programing they output.
The 4K content is currently available on DIRECTV Satellite and will be available on DIRECTV STREAM soon. We're working on improving your experience, so you can continue enjoying the best content with the finest quality. Santiago, DIRECTV Community Specialist
How long will it take till y’all add 4k to DIRECTV stream? Seems way outdated to offer anything in 720p, I have a nice 4k OLED tv and would really like to see sports in 4k. I pay for ATT wireless and ATT fiber so being able to stay with ATT is preferred.

I just moved from Satellite to Stream, but this is a HUGE deal if HBO, etc. is not in 4K, although it would be available in 4K via HBO app, which is not available anymore when I try to log in, as before. If I can't get 4K as before, I will need to find an alternate service.
There is limited content made in 4K. Just because the TV is 4K, and even if the TV provider's equipment supports it, doesn't mean there is enough programming out there (in true 4K, not older content "upscalled").
Even the traditional DirecTV service (satellite) is still finishing shutting down MPEG-2/SD-only content to solidify regular HD as the norm.
This is the early days of true 4K. From my perspective, it hasn't really picked up steam during the pandemic so may still be a while. Provided it doesn't go the way of 3D TV.

HBO on DirecTV Satellite is not 4K. The HBO Max App on your DirecTV Stream box or other 4K-compatible streaming device should be 4K for shows that are broadcast in 4K.

I hope they will add the option to detect HDR and not have to have it on full time for non HDR content.

If they do ever offer it, it will be at a premium like other streaming services.
