4K stream on DTV app on Apple TV is very disappointing

I've been searching far and wide for information related to why the 4K stream from the DTV app on an apple tv is so bad but have found nothing useful.

I've tried switching the settings to the "recommended settings" called out by the app but it does nothing.  On three TVs with an Apple 4k, when I choose the 4K stream it always looks like its 20 frames per second.  I have a budget TCL, a mid-range Sony, and a powerhouse 85" QLED.  It looks exactly the same on all three and it so disappointing.

The logical conclusion here is that either the stream from the DTV app is trash or incompatible with Apple Tvs.   4K content from any other source on the apple tv is gorgeous so I'm 100% certain its not all three of my apple tvs.   I end up switching live games from the 4k stream to a 1080p stream on another channel and it amazing in comparison.

I'm hoping for some input from DTV to let us know when this will be fixed because i'm paying for channels that look worse than their 1080p counterparts.

Depends on several things, for example:

  • Content-type: sports vs. documentaries; providers sometimes usually say it's 4K, however, I've seen 4K that doesn't look like 4K
  • Setup: internet, HDMI cables, HDMI ports; replace cables, change HDMI ports
  • Device: it's known, for example, that AppleTV 4K 1st gen is getting sluggish by the day (from 2017, AFAIK); an example is the latest tvOS 18 problem where AV sync was identified in these devices.

- Which specific device do you have?

- Which specific content did you identify this at? Documentaries, sports?

Every time I watch 4K content on DirectTv Stream, my Samsung S90d television does not change back to SDR. It stays on HDR. I have to restart Apple TV 4K every time in order to go back to SDR. If I watch 4K content on Apple TV, it always  reverts to SDR when I go back to DirectTv 1080i/P content. So this is a DirectTv stream issue. Pretty bad that I have to restart Apple Tv EVERY time when I watch 4K content on DirectTv stream. Please fix. I pay a great deal every month to DirectTv stream. Thank you.

Does your Samsung have a setting somewhere that willl automatically switch between picture quality? My Hisense has an "auto" setting.

I’ve gone through all the settings on my Samsung Tv as well as the settings on Apple TV 4K. Everything is correct. It’s supposed to automatically switch back to SDR from HDR. It switches correctly when I watch 4K content on Apple TV. It only doesn’t switch back when I’m on the DirectTv stream app watching their 4K channel. I hope DirectTv is moderating these posts and can fix this. Just very disappointing, since I pay a premium monthly payment. Maybe I need to switch to Sling or some other streaming service.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app? Sling? Good luck lol

Yea, uninstalled and reinstalled. No go. Hopefully, someone from DirectTv will pass this on to the engineers. Thanks.

Hopefully they will be improving these apps. With everything migrating from AT&T sale of their ownership, next year may be interesting.

Side note: It is DirecTV not DirectTv. Only a single 'T' in the brand. Just something to watch for as scams out there will do something minor like that to catch you.
