DIRECTV STREAM box stuck in HDR as default setting
I cannot believe this is an issue and apparently has gone on for MONTHS. Even during beta testing. This box forces HDR which is completely unacceptable. I just signed up for service a few days ago assuming this issue was fixed a long time ago. DIRECTV STREAM please fix this problem and allow us to disable HDR. It’s completely useless and looks terrible when watching tv since all content is in SDR.

If I turn off Auto HDR on my other Sony tvs that won’t look as good when watching an HDR or Dolby Vision program and defeats the purpose of having the tv.

U can simply turn it back on when you are watching HDR content. Turn it off when you are watching dtv stream---until you get the HDR on/off toggle dtv stream update.

That's pretty pathetic.

Why can't HDR be automatically toggled on/off based upon video content? You know, just like Apple TV does today. I decided to keep the DIRECTV Stream device. Still in box though. Is the manual HDR toggle officially available to all yet?
Thanks.

Appears to be a staggered roll out. HUGE drawback is that the box has to do a reset every time you switch it on or off for non-HDR programming. And that takes a few minutes. After playing with it for awhile I've pretty much stopped using it. If someone can advise me on how I can work around it, I'm all ears.

Thanks, I'll leave it off 24/7. I'll use my Apple TV for HDR content. Maybe tonight I'll take it out of the box. Fingers crossed I got the HDR disable switch! Imagine if we had to reboot the device when switching from stereo to 5.1. kinda the same thing... The remote and channel number option the main reason I'm keeping the box.

My thoughts exactly. Nice try ATT/DTV, at least you've recognized the issue. Perhaps the reboot requirement can be addressed next, but that might be a big ask.

Every other android 10 box can detect if a show is in HDR or not. Does DirecTv not have any programmers capable of writing an app that works? It really doesnt matter since DirecTv Stream has no 4K HDR channels like YouTubeTV, Fubo, and Xfinity and every other top of the line service.

Yep, my $40 buck Amazon 4k stick can do it too. The DTV Stream box is the only device I own that cannot automatically switch in and out of HDR. My other reason for keeping the box, it's my backup to my Apple TV. If it goes down I'll have a backup for the Laker games. It's crazy to think someone approved HDR as the default setting for non HDR content. 🤦♂️

The Roku Ultra and FireTV4K stick both default to HDR, but at least you can turn it off.
I have no idea why they do that. Another thing is they dont offer a video passthrough, so a 480p channel is output as 480p and a 4K is output as 4K. I prefer the TV I spend $3K on to do the upscaling, not a $70 box.

I got the on/off HDR toggle button for my three AT&T TV boxes yesterday.
On my main critical watching tv I turned it off and couldn’t tell one but if difference. I think if the button actually did something I should see a big difference in the picture because this tv was professionally calibrated.
So I’m not to sure it actually did anything but turn off the notification EDID that told the tv that it was receiving a HDR signal however the picture still looks the same as before.
Another reason I can tell is that my AT&T TV box in this main tv runs through my Marantz 8805 pre-amp and the on screen volume of the marantz pops up at the bottom, the white areas around the it is still very very bright like HDR is still activated.

My A80J has a separate picture setting for SDR and HDR, so when I flipped the switch and rebooted the box, it came up using the calibrated SDR settings, so it for sure switched. Now it matches the app on the TV.

This may confuse things more, but... I just started DirecTV Stream 2 days ago. My box has the HDR select switch. The TV is a 3 year old Samsung 65" 8K model. No AVR. TV set to enable HDR and Input Signal Plus. If I change the HDR setting on the DirecTV box (and restart) the only change I see is that the TV reports HDR status the same as set on the DTV box. I do not see any significant change in the picture quality either way. That is, I don't need to turn off HDR at the DTV box.
