Does the streaming player work better these days?

A couple of years ago, we have Directv stream.  They forced us into buying these two media streaming boxes.  We never really used them because you couldn't use hulu on it and the live TV worked didn't have DVR capabilities.  You couldn't pause rewind etc on live tv... only recordings.  With a roku, all of this stuff works just fine.

Right now, we're using a Google Chromecast with Google TV with Directv Stream.  It works good except I don't like the way the remote's navigation works.  All you have is the up down, back, forward, and center button to control it.  If you're watching a recording and hit the back or forward button, it rewinds and fast forwards.  But, if you're watching live TV, if you hit back or forward button, it changes the channel.  I've found, if I tap the middle button, I then can tap the back and forth button to fast forward and rewind.  But, if I'm just not thinking and hit back or forth, I change the channel and I then loose my ability to rewind on the channel I was watching.

It would be nice if it just worked like a traditional TV service where you have a channel button and a fast forward and rewind button and the buttons do what they say they'll do.

Does it work better these days?

The Directv Stream box (now called Gemini) has always been able to pause and rewind on live tv. You can rewind if you have been on the same channel for a while and a buffer builds up. Same way as all the apps except the box's remote makes rewind, ff easier. In my opinion, it's the best device. Hulu app is on there too.

Hello David.

One of our goals is to make our DIRECTV via internet App friendly for all customers. Your experience with our devices helps us improve our services daily.
We cannot change the function of the Chromecast remote. However, we will take your remote and interface feedback and share it with our specialized team to consider this feature as an option in a future update for the App on Chromecast. Here's additional information about Chromecast streaming: https://www.directv.com/support/stream/article/KM1228149

Thank you for your time and for being part of our DIRECTV family. Jordanesco, DIRECTV Community Specialist.

What streaming devices do you have to stream your Directv Stream other than your Chromecast?  You said that when you got Directv Stream you were forced to buy 2 streaming boxes where they from Directv Stream or did you purchase them elsewhere?  You also mention that you have Roku devices are these the devices that you were forced to buy?

The rokus were not what we were force to buy.  it was an att box.  I think it was google OS, but it didnt allow us to use Hulu.  We had an installment plan through at&t.  I had to pay them off to cancel early a few years back.

Is it the same box we would've gotten a few years ago and, if we plugged it in, it would update to the same firmware as today's version or is it different hardware all together?

They forced us into buying these two media streaming boxes.

You could have said no. It was your option, not something you're forced into.

The Gemini (current name of box as they have rebranded a few times) is preferred. It has the FF/REW capability, but also a remote to choose channels. Roku or another streaming box can be fine, just have a basic streaming remote. (either way a box of some sort is the way to go as the 'smart' TV app is sub-par). If you couldn't REW/Pause live TV with the service's branded box, that was a technical issue.

The current boxes are the C71KW-400 if your box is a C71KW-200 then this will no longer update(Look at the bottom of your box to find out).  But if you have the C71KW-400 then you could try and plug in and see about updating your box but as your boxes are a few years old and I would assume have not been used or connected in quite some time they most likely will not update but you could at least try.
