I would never go with refurbished "anything". Even at the price of $49.99 there are better streaming options in my opinion.

I don't have one. So, if I understand you correctly, the option is only available to me once I have an account, is that correct?

Customer support found it for me! https://www.directv.com/shop/stream/entertainment-package . Probably a similar URL for the other packages. Scroll down to the listing for the DirecTV Stream device -- often referred to as the Osprey, for some reason -- and click the plus sign.
And there it is! I was told ordering it takes 4 to 6 business days.
My situation is that I want to make sure it works for the third outside stream, which is otherwise restricted to mobile devices. And, on mobile devices, you cannot cast DVR recordings with the DirecTV Stream app, for some stupid reason, only live channels. So the only way to watch your DVR recordings on your TV with the third outside stream is to use the Osprey. I would want to verify that for myself during the free trial. But the free trial only lasts 5 days, which means there's no way to test it before the free trial is over, since delivery can take up to six business days.
Hmmm. Perhaps one is better off getting the Osprey off of eBay after all.
It's also occurred to me that if you have three outside streams going, the system might be perfectly free to designate one of the OTHER outside streams as the "third" stream, rather than the one with the Osprey. If that happens, then you will STILL need an Osprey for that other outside stream as well.
In other words, to ensure that you don't have the DVR recording casting problem, perhaps you need to have ALL THREE OUTSIDE STREAMS using an Osprey. Hmmm.

New customers can choose a refurbished unit during the signup process. Once you click onto the + to choose 1 or more boxes the choices come up below that. (5/month, 120, or 49.99 reburbished)

Hey, I just read something which may render my whole interest in the expensive and thorny question of Ospreys moot!!!
Specifically, this DirecTV Stream subreddit user, Scoocha, is claiming that it is now possible to cast DVR recordings from an Android phone to a TV using the DirecTV Stream app!!! If this is true, this is a game-changer. This is a huge part of the reason why my peeps have refrained from switching to DTVS even though it incorporated free Unlimited DVR and unlimited home streaming with three outside streams a few months ago. If they have indeed fixed this, it makes our lives ten times easier, and make DTVS a very viable solution for us!!!
I seriously hope a few people in this forum, who have Android phones and who have DTVS, can check whether this years-long awaited fix has actually finally arrived to the DTVS Android phone app. If it has, that's a GAME-CHANGER!!!!

We do have ChromeCast. Every time we've tried to cast a DVR recording from our phones with DirecTV Stream we've gotten a nasty message that DVR casting is not available. Now, according to this Reddit user, that has been fixed. Could someone here verify that, please?

Right, that's how it's always been for us as well. So I guess that Reddit user may have been wrong.

All they are, are boxes that previous customers returned. They just run a test, make sure they have the latest firmware and offer them at a reduced price. These aren't damaged boxes that needed some type of repair. They are fine.

Still, if we have to get three of them for our outside users, that's $150 dollars plus new technology that everyone has to learn. That's a non-starter. Looks like we're stuck with YouTube TV until DTVS can fix this.

@criggs So, these people can learn how to use YTTV but not Dtv stream? The box makes using stream a lot easier than using an app. My 8yo nephew comes over and uses the box with no problem. If you don't own one--how do you know how difficult it is to "learn"

Unfortunately there's a history here. You see, we've been changing services roughly once every eight months, as prices have dropped or increased and as channels have been dropped and added. We started with Omniverse in November, 2018 and, from there, changed to YouTube TV, AT&T TV Now, a combo of Sling/Locast/Stremium and, finally, back to YouTube TV, which is where we are now.
And my peeps are sick of it. They do not view this as a series of fun adventures playing with new toys, as I do. Instead, they deeply resent new technology and view it an evil burden to be endured, rather than as a fancy house to be explored. The idea of dropping their Rokus and Fires and switching to an Osprey would be anathema to them. It would be a deal-breaker.
In short, the only reason why they joined up with me for these arrangements back in 2018 was to save money, nothing else. They consider this whole matter to be a chore, like paying the bills in order to keep a roof over their heads. The less they need to think about it or spend time on making choices, or learning new gear, the better. They deeply resent this whole process, wish it would go away, and are furious that cable TV became so expensive that they were essentially forced to make the switch. They wish this whole thing would never have been necessary in the first place.
No, not the way I wish things were with us. But that's the way they are unfortunately.

Just be careful, I purchased a box from someone on Facebook Market. They told me they never used the box, but when I got it home it was tied to a someone's user ID. I texted the person who sold me the box and they assured me they had never used it. As a matter of fact they canceled their streaming service about a week after they got the box.
We did a 3 way call to DTV stream, they confirmed that the box I was sold was in fact a refurbished box they had sold to the person I purchased it from.
When I asked why then, if he never registered it was it showing tied to someone else's user ID / account. The rep confirmed that the user ID it was tied to was neither his nor mine. They then told me something very odd. They said when they get boxes sent back, they test them, certify them as "refurbished" and send them out.
They do not untether them from the previous owners account, which to me seems really strange. So basically I can't use the box. I did the hard reset with the red button push for 30 seconds. I've gone into the menu and signed out, but as soon as I do, there's a message on the screen which reads "signing you in" then it signs in to the original owners account.
DTV claims they have no ability to remove this from the original owners account, and that had the person I purchased it from, activated under is account, then deactivated it, I would be able to use it.
I'd love for any of the rocket scientists at DTV stream to tell me why, if they have confirmed that the person whom sold me the box, did in fact purchase it from DTV refurbished but never activated it, they can't reset the (Edited per community guidelines) thing on there end so I can use it.
No one can give me an answer. If you've had any experience and were able to get some help from DTV which doesn't include, "just buy another box". Please let me know.
