False advertising?

Got this advertisement:

"Welcome to Victory Lane

With DIRECTV, you can watch NASCAR live all season long on the channels you need: FOX, FS1, NBC, USA Network, TNT, truTV and The CW."
So I signed up.   First, they cut off the end of the Nascar races.  I dont get FOX or CW because they are in year two of a "contract dispute", but still pay the same price as those that do get those stations.   I totally feel like I was ripped off.

Instead of being charged per local, they are bundled into the package cost. As long as you get one local channel, you are getting what you pay for. They don't charged locals differently based on where you live, unlike RSN fees or taxes.

That advertisement is the general info. Before starting you see what specific local channels where you live. Since they don't own the channels, they have a clause in their Terms of Service that channels/programming is subject to change at any time. They cannot force the locals to provide service. Unfortunately sounds like your local affiliate owner is holding out to be paid more, which would increase our bills (for channels we get free over the regular airways).

If you cannot enjoy TV without those locals then you plug in a regular antenna or go with another service that currently has them. Just be aware, this can happen with any provider as network owners are wanting more and more each year and this seems to only be getting worse with local channels with all providers.

I get ZERO local stations.

That might make sense if DirecTV wasnt the highest priced service here, and all the other lower priced services have them.   I really wanted the better picture quality DirecTV offers.   As for antennas, I have one,  but the CW station is in a totally different direction, so I either lose Fox and CBS or lose CW.   My DVR doesnt automatically program my rotor to turn between programs.

Umm, zero locals? That doesn't sound right. What is your zip code and county? You should be getting something, unless you are on a rare no-locals package (before locals were available to DirecTV in all markets, which would be cheaper than the normal version).

Doesn't matter if you view DirecTV as the highest priced service. Network owners charge more each year to be carried. Sometimes they pull the feed and can hold out for a while trying to strong arm the provider in a better deal for them (which is not so good for us customers). Local channels in the last several years (decade at this point?) have been been getting worse. And one local affiliate owner has an agreement with another so influences some of these negotiation standoffs, which gets around the rule of said owner having a limit of how many network stations they may own.

I have the MySports Genre Pack.  It is supposed to come with NBC and FOX.

Zip code is 72118.   NBC is owned by Nexstar and Fox is run by Nexstar but owned by Mission Broadcasting who also owns CW which is also run by Nexstar.  In any event, since MySports does not come with CBS or ABC, I dont get any locals, where my cousin in Waukesha (53186) gets both NBC and FOX.   If I got those two, I could keep my antenna pointed at CW and be good to go.   Considering according to DirecTV, they have been "negotiating" for over two YEARS.

Those channels removed their feed to DTV otherwise you would be getting them.

Yea, this is not going to work out.  Even the races I can get on FS1 are cut off before the race is over.   Im just going to go back to YouTubeTV.   They carry all the same sports channels and all 6 of my locals for $15 more.  Thanks for the help.

Local channels come from the base package and are determined by where you live.

The genre pack doesn't allow you to pick and choose specific locals.

You should be getting several local channels: 2, (PBS), 4 (NBC), 7 (ABC), 11 (CBS), 42 (MyNetworkTV).

https://streamtv.directv.com/channels/

Yes because of Nexstar and Mission, those specific locals are not provided to DirecTV. So DirecTV cannot give you what they don't have in the first place. Nexstar is arguably the worst local affiliate owner when it comes to carriage disputes. DirecTV would be willing to carry them, but apparently is waiting for a reasonable offer and will not chase a local station that is free by antenna. Most of us don't go to pay TV for free locals, but understandable that is frustrating for those not in good signal range.

I understand that some would rather not pay more for greedy locals.

The picture quality was nice, as was not having to pay extra for 4K.

I have cancelled for now, and if they ever decide to negotiate with my locals, Ill come back.

As it stands, my biggest complaint other than missing CW and FOX, is they cut off Nascar races and do not auto-extend them.  This was an issue when I tried DirecTV back in 2022, and there were lots of complaints here in this forum.   DirecTv reps said they were escalating to upper management.  Now they offer a stand alone sports package, and added auto-extend to almost all the sports, but still leave Nascar out.

Additionally, my Osprey box is self-restarting about every hour even after doing a factory reset, and DirecTv would not offer the newer Gemini Air as a replacement.  The locking FF was one of the main reasons I switched, because I hate hitting the D pad 25 times on YouTubeTV to skip a commercial break.

It was worth spending $69 to see how they have progressed in 3 years since I originally cancelled, but as of now, they are still not the service I need.

Hopefully with ATT divesting, the new owners will make some changes.

Thanks for the help, and hope everyone enjoys their day.

All TV providers deal with local negotiations where the channel owner pulls the feed to use upset customers as leverage. In most cases they are days, maybe weeks in length. The long-standing one with Nexstar (and their associates) has been the most problematic. I hope one day Federal regulations can step in and stop this loophole around Monopoly rules. And certainly hope this one remains unique and other local affiliate owners don't go as extreme.

Even with DirecTV (satellite vs DIRECTV STREAM) where they have a setting to auto-extend, it hasn't been reliable, partly as requires them to get the right information from the programmer to do so. So for sports fans it is always suggested to set the next program to record as a safeguard. Not perfect, but it gives an option.

Gemini (Osprey originally) and Gemini Air are two different lines of equipment. One is not a warranty replacement for the other. No agent can change that is a business decision way above their level.

As ownership is changing (AT&T sold last year, but transaction still completing), I would definitely keep an ear out for any changes over the next couple years. Personally I feel equipment quality and flexibility became stagnant, so I hope the new owner changes some direction there.

Hope the change works out for you and take care.
