How do you extend the time on a recording.

I record my sports programs on DIRECTV STREAM but they run over the hour a lot of the time and I can’t figure out how to add a 30 minute or so extension on the recording when I set it up.

Assuming you are talking about DIRECTV STREAM, with the cloud DVR - you can't.  Although the feature to extend recording times has been requested basically since the cloud DVR first went into beta test, they haven't added it.  The only workaround (which the DIRECTVhelp reps will cheerfully pop in to suggest, with no sense of shame about it) is to also record the following show.  This will produce a separate recording, so when the playback of the first ends, you will need to manually switch to the second.

For some reason DIRECTV STREAM cannot or have not been able to add this much needed option.  Hopefully it will come down the road!!!!

This is really shocking. My TiVo could do this in 2005.

And they do it in the (on-premise rather than cloud) DVR for U-Verse.  They have never said anything about the DVR feature set, but it seems like they could add this to a cloud DVR.  However, they haven't noticeably enhanced the DVR features since it was released (over 2 years ago), so improving it certainly doesn't seem to be a priority to them.

We're new to DIRECTV STREAM (after U-Verse went away), and this is the single most ANNOYING non-feature of the entire system. There's no excuse for this in 2020, and now we're stuck in a two-year contract - and all b/c they just don't feel like adding this SIMPLE, early-millennium feature that should have been a given (again, TiVo was doing this 15 years ago)? Will be happy to tell any/everyone who asks to avoid this product for this reason alone.

Re: the NBA finals broadcast on ABC today....the program after the game is listed in the guide as “No information available.”  It’s clearly a spacer to allow for extra time for the game and any celebration coverage should there be one. But you can’t set a recording for it.  So you can’t extend a recording for the game  and you can’t record the next show. Unhappy DIRECTV STREAM customer here.

Wow, this has to be the stupidest coding error in the history of basic and common sense dvr recording options. Because of this coding error, I've missed the ending of two NBA finals now and various MLB playoff games that move around channels bc of overlaping game times. I recommend switching to xfinity if your are only focused on cable. I'm a high consumption cable user and former Uverse and Xfinity user and the difference between Xfinity cable and DIRECTV STREAM is night and day. I recently came back to DIRECTV STREAM for the fiber internet, expecting to also ATT Uverse only to realize I could only sign up for their low R&D budget DIRECTV STREAM. I'm shocked at the gap in features.

Ditto on the NBA comment above for today (10/11/2020). Tonight is most likely the final game yet there’s an hour blocked off from 7-8pm PST and I cannot record it. Sports games almost always go past the allotted time and making it “No Information Available” and unable to be recorded is very frustrating!

I'm purposely going to test this feature this weekend with the football games. I did do Monday Night Football which ran over about 20 minutes and the DVR caught at all so maybe they've added something.

As I indicated elsewhere, they added an auto-extend feature for recording sports that run long.  At the time the auto-extend feature came out, I was led to believe it didn't work on anything but RSNs, so it shouldn't have worked for MNF on ESPN, but perhaps ESPN (now?) also provides the needed signal.  If that is the case, it's probably just necessary to try it on various channels and games to see what works, because I haven't come across any actual announcement of this feature that would include the details.

ESPN may encode that signal for Monday Night Football, since in the 2 competing teams home markets (so this Monday night, Phoenix and Dallas/Ft Worth) the MNF game is also shown on Local OTA networks, by NFL Broadcasting rules.

So those Local simulcasts need that “Start/Stop” signal for the 2 Local networks, for when to pick up the ESPN feed and when to end it, since those Local networks only have permission to Simulcast the actual NFL contest

NFL Network *exclusive* TNF and Saturday NFL games may do the same, but I haven’t tried it, since those games are also carried by Local OTA networks in the competing team markets

This lack of an industry wide feature is not acceptable in this day of so many different provider choices.  I have missed the end of so many sporting events that I cannot count.  In addition, they do not have many games available that are considered "the biggest" game of the weekend such as the Cleveland/Pittsburgh game last weekend.  I could not even pay extra for the game.  So,  I have 11 accounts with AT&T and effective immediately, I am going to cancel them all.  Too many situations, such as this one, where it is clear that DIRECTV STREAM does not care about its customers. If they do not care about me, I am not going to continue to contribute to their massive cold and uncaring empire any further.

I hope everyone else here has better luck in the future but I am not waiting for that potential future to arrive.

DIRECTV STREAM is not a content provider, just a carrier.  They offer you the content that the content providers (networks and local stations) offer them, so if that game isn't playing on any of the channels that are part of your package, they don't have it to give you.  In particular, they don't offer pay-per-view sports.

The fact that they don't provide a way to "manually" extend a recording is an issue, and we don't know why they don't - it seems like that shouldn't be that complex a feature to add, and many have asked for it, mostly for recording sports.  (I have to admit that I personally don't see the attraction of recording sports - I either watch when it happens or live without.  But clearly many people have a different view.)

I don't think telling us that you are cancelling will impress anyone - DIRECTV STREAM won't even know what your issue is.  If you want to make a point to them as to why you are cancelling, you need to post to their social media accounts and/or contact "Loyalty" through Customer Service.

So I'm loving my brand new DIRECTV STREAM but can't figure out how to extend the recording of yesterdays Football games.  Of course the first game I record... MY VERY FIRST RECORDING!!!!! .. is Steelers/Colts and DVR runs out with Colts driving with 1:25 left in game.

Absolutely ridiculous.  As previous posters have stated this is BASIC DVR functionality.
