3D Programs

I just learned that 3D programs will not WORK with closed captioning. If any of you have 3D HDTV and 3D channels/programs, does the closed captioning works? does it interupt the shows or anything like that? your help is greatly appreciate it.

go to this link and scroll down to page 3 where it indicated "no closed caption".

There is no closed captioning encoded into 3D programs at this time. Try it and nothing will happen. CC just is not present.

I got an email from EEG Enterprise regarding closed captioned for 3D programs.

My name is Bill McLaughlin from EEG, and Karen Italo forwarded me your
email on the lack of 3D closed captioning on DirecTV. In the DirecTV
forum post you referenced, I see a user told you "There is no closed
captioning encoded into 3D programs at this time."

Unfortunately, this problem is not just with DirecTV, and DirecTV alone
cannot solve it. At this time, there is no standardized way for TV
providers to encode 3D closed captions that can be read by your TV or
set-top box (STB). There is currently a CEA committee working on this
problem. They will be adding 3D support to the CEA-608 and CEA-708
standards that govern required closed captioning. EEG has membership on
this committee and is working to make 3D closed captioning a reality,
but a new standard can take some time, because it must be approved by
many parties including TV broadcasters, pay TV providers, and consumer
electronics manufacturers. We know many people rely on this service and
hope it will be available soon.

In the meantime, one thing you can do is lobby DirecTV, or individual TV
channels, to provide open-captioned versions of 3D programming. Some
providers have done this for certain 3D events- the concept is they
actually provide the same event on 2 different channel numbers, and one
of those channels has the event with open captions displayed over the
video. (In case you haven't heard these terms, "open" captioning means
that the caption display is always on, whereas "closed" captioning means
it is the viewer's choice to turn the captions on or off.) This is
possible because the 3D open captions are transmitted simply as video,
they are not specially encoded like closed captions which need to
interact with your TV or STB for decoding. This is the solution we
recommend to TV providers for 3D video accessibility until a full closed
captioning standard is available.

Sincerely,
Bill McLaughlin
