Connect your HR24 using your laptops WiFi!!

If your router is too far from your HR24 receiver and you want to connect it to the internet I found a detailed article that shows how to do it...

The connection to the Internet is intended to be a continuous thing and having to leave your laptop tethered to the HR24 and up and running 24/7 is not very practical.

I understand where your coming from but some people may only want to use it at times to watch a movie or something rather than not using it at all because they can't find a way to connect the reciever to their router..

Unfortunately the OnDemand/CinemaPlus services requires a steady internet connection for several hours before the downloadable shows and movies appear in the Guide. So an intermittent internet connection won't work just to watch a movie or something.

And I you as well.  It was a good idea and suggestions are always welcome.  I was simply advising you that this particular idea was not practical.  As Litzdog posted, the connection requires a considerable amount of downloaded material before it will even function.  And, in addition, the main server expects a continuous connection in order to handle the charges for pay per view programming.  Part time just won't be of any use.

A really nice wireless adapter is available from Directv that will provide the continuous service required if a hard wire connection is not practical.

But what im trying to say is somehow you can get it to work. Even if you have to leave your computer on for a couple of hours the first time after you can just connect it while watching a movie and the remove it. Thats how it works for me its simple...

is not that simple.  the on demand library updates on a regular basis. leaving the HDDVR "of the net" will require the same long process the next time it connects.  not practical at all...

Best to stick with what is known the work, which is the wireless connection kit available from DirecTV, if a wired connection can't be run.   I am the one with the belief that a jury rig system will be that, jury rigged and it will work as such.

You've been lucky.  But it's not good general advice.

Understand that we have no objection whatever to your using this setup, and I can see that you're happy with it.  The problem we have is you offering this as a good idea for anyone else who may read this.

Log in to your DirecTV.com account.  Select the "My Account" tab.  Select "View and upgrade my equipment".  On the "My Equipment" tab, select "Cinema Connection Kit".

Wow $79.99, even though it says "The DIRECTV CINEMA™ Connection Kit allows you to get over 6,000 shows and movies on DIRECTV CINEMA™ streamed instantly to your TV, at no extra charge"!!!!!!!!!

No wonder you don't want us to use  laptop tethered to the HR24. You want to squeeze more money out of us!!!! Don't you think this price is rather high?

No.  Check out the prices for "wireless ethernet adapters".  The $80 price is actually about as cheap as you'll find these devices.

we could care less what you use.  we are not DirecTV employees.  we are customers like yourself and were given solid advice to the OP.  if you want to take it, is up to you.
