DIRECTV App
We heard you. DIRECTV is enhancing the DVR playback feature for satellite customers using the app and rolling out updates in the coming weeks. Customers with Internet connected HR44, HR54, or HS17 will be able to access and play most of their recordings by, August.

That’s good! I’m just a little curious about the ‘play most of their recordings’ wording. Are some of them unplayable? Would those be the ones that don’t have TV Everywhere functionality? Just curious in general.

Is this both in and out-of-home networks? (still in-country of course)
And just for clarity, this is only for recordings on those exact models? (i.e. HR44 with an HR24, only the HR44's recordings would be accessible).

4 or 5 years ago I was able to record shows on my HR 44 and watch them on my iPhone and my other TV that was not connected to a genie DVR, but using the same Internet, and I had no problems, but that was a few years ago. For the last year or two most recorded shows can't be watched/Streamed (when on "my List" menu on my iPhone device or my other Internet connected TV.
Directv should not misguide with false claims. I have called countless times and I'm using the latest app for DIRECTV.
Since I am not a DIRECTV Stream client, only DIRECTV customer I can't use DirectvStream app either.

As stated in the beginning of this post DTV is bring back the ability to stream from the Genie DVRs in future updates. DTV has combined the DTV sat app and the DTV streaming app.

It's been an issue for at least a couple of years now. A few DIRECTV reps told me I need to call DIRECTV stream. I am not a DIRECTV Stream member, so it does no good.
One rep stated that certain networks block Streaming so although you can watch it on your genie, you cannot stream it on other devices.
they shouldn't advertise this if that's the case. Over 90% of the shows I record are blocked from streaming.
Seems like they've been passing the buck for quite a while.
Defend them all you want, but I am not buying into it.

The new app has both bugs and features yet to be released in addition not all streaming permissions from the networks are the same from the old app. So there is a little bit of column A and bit of column B going on.
This announcement was long awaited on to return some key functionality of the old app. Don't expect it to be perfect on launch as it may go through some growing pains, but at least it is returning.
And even once implemented, it will not give you 100% of what you get on the receiver. The mobile app was never built to be a complete replacement of watching at home.

All I want is what I had 1 year ago -- the ability to watch a show recorded on my dvr IN MY OWN HOME, ON MY IN HOUSE NETWORK, but on an ipad. How tough is this?

It is a brand new app to combine DirecTV and DIRECTV STREAM into one option. It is planned to incorporate newer equipment that didn't support all the options before (i.e. Genie-2/HS17). There is a lot going on right now as not only are they recovering from everything that affected businesses during the pandemic (such as the short staffing), but they are working with a new co-owner that has taken over management of DirecTV.
So it can be pretty tough. Those that think it should be easy should apply for a job and show up entire companies that they can do better. If not, then being patient like the rest of us while they rollout the new/returning features as they announced within the last week.

Juniper, my dear friend, I rejoined DTV 2 weeks ago. I was a 10 yr customer and a relocation 1 yr ago put me in a spot to be forced to local cable. I am glad to be back but was not told an important function was downgraded. So that is where I am. If you want to be the person in charge of shaming customers who are paying in good faith, you have my vote.

Juniper - The complete lack of communication (and outright gaslighting) by DirecTv regarding a feature THAT AT ONE POINT WORKED FLAWLESSLY that was gutted and replaced by their streaming client THAT DID NOT WORK. I'm sick of this run-around I and many other satellite subscribers have received these past 2 years. From what I understand this feature will not work with all of the models. So it really isn't fixed unless you have the right Equpment

No shaming intended. Just tired of those that say "how tough can it be" or "it is easy, I could do it". So if one truly believes such statements, then they should go make it happen themselves, is my perspective.
No agent can go over all the changes that may have occurred since the last time you were with DirecTV. If a feature is important to you, then I would suggest asking about it before deciding on choosing a provider. As has been mentioned there are challenges right now including a new combined app. Thankfully those features are going to start returning shortly. Just be prepared for some growing pains as they test it out.

It will not work with every model DirecTV has ever had. There was a major change to the GUI and software for newer models. They cannot continue to support older models forever.
According to the opening post, it will support the HR44 and up. That is the second generation Genie which is the first to have received the overhauled software. So it makes sense features of the new app will not be for models before that one that stay on legacy software.

Well this would go a ways to keeping me in the DirecTV fold, both because I've long wanted that functionality back, but also because I'd probably return my HR24 and Mini-Client and save $14/month
