DirecTV satellite dropping Alexa voice control???

I use Alexa to control my DTV sat due to physical disabilities.  I got a message on my Genie today that DTV is dropping Alexa voice support as of 10/17/23 (in just one week!!!).

Is anyone aware of any other voice control options that DO NOT require pressing a button on a remote to activate??

Thanks!

DTV has always had a free upgrade offer every 2 years of continued service and on new customer installs.

Disabling Alexa support does not push people to upgrade their DirecTV equipment. It was announced a while back that it was just too costly and to niche for DirecTV to maintain support of that 'skill'.

DirecTV is NOT a global corporation. Where did you even get that idea? DirecTV, even the spin-off DIRECTV STREAM (and the various names it has had), is licensed for United States only. There is a separate company DirecTV Latin America (which you can guess where that is), but that doesn't make it global. Travel the world and you will not find DirecTV in other countries.

If you cannot live without Alexa controlling your TV, then find another provider. Simple as that.

All upgrades, including the initial offer when you join DirecTV, come with a 24 month service agreement. It is valued at $20 for each month remaining. Because of the investment of equipment and install that is there to minimize any loss if someone decides to leave early. Most often people stay well pass such an agreement which means overall DirecTV still thrives.

And just because you don't like the answers, as they don't return Alexa to you, doesn't make them non-answers. We get it you are mad and just wanting to vent around even though you know it will not accomplish anything. If you've "had enough" then call DirecTV and cancel will be a more productive use of your time.

here is a potential workaround for you. there are companies that make 'smart' devices that will physically push a button. one of them is called 'switchbot' . you can set  the device up to phsically push a button using alexa. for example, the  lights on my christmas tree have a pushbutton to turn them on and off. i say 'alexa, turn on my christmas tree' and a couple of seconds later the little 'bot' physically pushes the button. you can program it to push/retract ot push for a certain amoint of time or just push and stay pushed. i figure in your case, you could set it up to push the voice control button on the directv remote. for example 'alexa, activate my voice remote' then the switchbot would push the button on the remote. then you could talk to the directv remote. then you would say 'alexa, release my voice remote' and the switchbot would release the button. note: you could pick any phrases you want, i just used those as examples. another option would be to set it up so the switchbot presses the button for several seconds and then automatically releases. i do not work for switchbot, i just use them. there might be other companies that do a similar thing. note, like many smart devices, you need to set up one of their hubs to control their devices. the hub runs about $40-$70 depending on the model. the bots are around $30 each. i just though of another possibility.... the switchbot hub itself actually also works as an infrared remote that also works with alexa. it can learn and control any remote that works using infrared and then you can activate it with your voice. so, that might be another way to control things (not even just the tv) by voice. hope this helps :)

This is so frustrating.  I have one harmony remote that we use for all our devices and have routines setup with Amazon Alexa that change to specific channels, turn lights on, hue sync box etc.  This is extremely short sighted by Direct TV and sets them back to the dark age instead of being progressive. I will also now be looking for other providers that do work with Amazon.

Absolutely pitiful DTV would dump Alexa users. I’ll be dumping them immediately.
