Error 22 - Cause

Hello,
There has been a great deal on this forum about the Error 22 people are getting. Everything from change the cable from the top to the bottom port to edit the ARP table(!). After spending quite some time on the phone with DirecTV support and working through some issues I have been able to get out of them that Error 22 has nothing to do with the configguration of the reciever. It refers to there being a physical network error, it is a network connection timeout error. If you are getting an Error 22 then you have a physical routing/connection issue with your network. These issues can be caused by bad wiring, bad network hub, or (as in my case) to many hops to get out. I had my cable running to a hub that fed into a switch that then connected to the DSL modem. This is apparently one to many hops for this device and the connection timed out, even though everything else I connected to this port worked fine (Wii, PS3 and notebook). So before you get out notepad and start looking for your ARP table, do a physical check of your network. Try to eliminate a hop, or recrimp an end or simply replace some wires. Because even though the port might be fine for some devices this service requires much more stability in the connection. I would have never figured this out if it wasn't for the lack of service I got from DirecTV. He basically told me that unless the device is connected directly to the outbound source (DSL or Cable modem) they won't support it.

So good luck, I am not just waiting for the VOD content to propigate, and off I go...
