ESPN 3D (Channel 106) Issues
Hello
I've been digging through the forums about this, and noticed that there are folks, especially the owners of Vizio and Mitsubishi TV's explaining that there are having difficulty using the 3D feature. I'm also having difficulty with this. Here's my situation:
Tune to 106, TV switches to 3D, and the a message displays from the DTV Receiver saying:
Error 797, This TV does not support 720p. I also get, your TV does not support the content protection for this programming.
I do know what the latter error means, because it occurs when a program is trying to send HDCP signal through your HDMI cable to the component hooked up to it. Now here's my setup:
HR-24/200
Samsung PN58C8000 58" 3DTV
Pioneer Elite VX-32 3D Receiver
Standard HDMI 1.4 Cables (Remember folks, it's a digital signal, doesn't matter the cable).
As I was saying before the HDCP message comes on when I have video conversion set to on, with my receiver. I don't have 3D issues with any other channel except ESPN3D. My speculation is that the NBA or ESPN sends a specific type of HDCP signal that either the DTV receiver is having issues with or my TV. I know it isn't my receiver because I have pass-through capabilities also (most receivers are default pass-through, and the high-end receivers can do either).
I also notice that when I set the DTV and A/V Receiver to display 720p only, it seems to override those options and always display 1080i. Another forum explained that tuning to certain channels before tuning to 106 is a workaround. I'll continue to try to figure out, and if someone has some suggestions I can certainly try them out.
Thanks,
-Moose

DIRECTV SOFTWARE ENGINEERS:
PLEASE FIX EDID INFO FOR ALL PIONEER RECEIVERS. THIS IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE, THERE IS NO REASON WHY A HDMI 1.4A REPEATER CANNOT PASS THIS THRU TO AN HDMI 1.4A DISPLAY
IT IS ABSOLUTE NON-SENSE TO EXPECT EVERYONE TO CONNECT THE DVR DIRECTLY TO A DISPLAY, SOME OF US NEED TO SWITCH FROM THE RECEIVER AND HAVE MULTIPLE DISPLAYS TO SUPPORT.
YOU ARE KILLING THE FORMAT BY CREATING THESE COMPATIBILITY ISSUES BY NOT USING THE 3D MANDATORY FORMATS AND NOT PROPERLY PASSING EDID INFORMATION.
THIS MUST BE CORRECTED ASAP, PLEASE REVIEW THE DBSTALK DIRECTV GENERAL FORUM "3D ISSUES" THERE ARE PLENTY OF REPORTS OF ISSUES.
AT CES, ALL OF THE CEMS WHERE COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW DIRECTV ENGINEERS WERE NOT WORKING WITH THEM TO CORRECT THESE ISSUES.
PIONEER, JVC, SONY, ONKYO, THOSE ARE JUST A HANDFUL OF HDMI 1.4A AVR'S THAT DO NOT RECEIVE PROPER EDID INFORMATION TO PASS ON.
PLEASE FIX IT.

You are talking to other customers. DirecTV engineers do not participate in this forum. They do read the reports at DBSTalk.com in the DirecTV section.

Send complaints here:

BTW, greywolf, the opening webpage to this forum states that DirecTV technical people are now visiting the forum. That should probably be removed if it is no longer true.
It also states that 3D service will start soon. So, the page obviously hasn't been updated in a while.

The only place DirecTV people are posting that I know of is the NFL forum. Posts by DirecTV employees will have the blue DirecTV logo under the name. They are not reading the 3D forum for technical issues. They go where the money is and, for DirecTV, that's football.

Unfortunately, anyone who is just looking at the home page to this forum would not know that. It does say that DirecTV employees would have a DirecTV logo under their name, but you have no way to know if the blue-people are reading without appending.
Again, I understand this thanks to your explanations. But, someone just looking at this forum for the first time wouldn't know that. So, it's confusing. As is the part about 3D starting soon...

Back when some of the VOD 3D titles weren't working and ESPN wasn't playable and wouldn't record for anybody, I posted the issues in the TKG private forum and asked that the posts be checked. Our contact said he passed on the info but didn't report anything after that. Things were fixed much later. DBSTalk.com gets more DirecTV attention. DirecTV really doesn't want responsibility for answers here for legal reasons. The experience of customers posting here is a valuable resource though.

I notified Pioneer of the problem. Here is my correspondence. I would feel more confident if the text in boldface came from DirecTV rather than Pioneer.

DirecTV broadcasts some 3D shows in 720p Side-by-Side format which is an optional format 3D format for broadcasters. My VSX-32 apparently does not support this format. The result is I am unable to play these shows on my Samsung PN63C8000 TV. My understanding is that this format is optional for broadcasters but mandatory for receivers and TVs. Will Pioneer upgrade the firmware to correct this?

Thank you for contacting Pioneer Electronics, Inc. The receiver fully supports the 3D signals. The signal Direct TV is transmitting is not compliant to the HDMI Organization specifications. We are told they will have this resolved in the first quarter. Please contact Direct TV for full details.
Thank You,

Hope Rocky is right - maybe when ESPN 3D goes 24/7.
Watch me pull a rabbit out of my 3D hat...(hopefully that wasn't too subtle)

Sort-of answered over in this thread:
http://forums.directv.com/message/10842016#10842016
Bottom line is that not even ESPN has published an ESPN 3D schedule yet that I can find.
Speculation - maybe they delayed launch in order to produce more content.

ESPN does not have a schedule for there 24/7 programing. That schedule on the ESPN 3D page is for live events. I've been trying to find out for the last 3 days why we can't watch the 24/7 programing yet. In Jan ESPN announced they have enough programs to go 24/7 on Feb, 14. Now they say live on one of there web pages. But the big question is where our they LIVE?

According to ESPN Rep we talked to last night they assured us that they are running the programming now and it is directv's issue because ESPN was showing that Directv was getting the programming. Directv seemed to have no clue when we talked to them last night. Trying to find answers but on tvguide.com it shows directv showing all the 3D programming re- runs but when you go to the station "to be announced".

Hopefully DirecTV is trying to figure out what to do with the formatting problem, namely 720p Side-by-Side. We can only hope they are working out a way to do 720p Top-and-Bottom. But then what will we talk about on this 3D forum?
Debuting a 3D channel that cannot be seen by over half of the 3D sets really doesn't seem like much of a launch. The 3Net launch was handled properly and will get much more interest just because all 3D set owners can actually watch 3Net. I was using 3Net for a demo this morning.
Of course a way for the HR2X/H2x to scale just 3D to 1080i would work just as well. The JVC projection owners have found a way to trick the HR2x into scaling 720p SbS to 1080i SbS but it's more trouble than it's worth for what has been on ESPN 3D so far (when DirecTV was actually broadcasting it).
Now give me a 3D major league baseball game, and I might renew my interest in ESPN 3D. Too bad last year's 3D game isn't being rebroadcast, although that was on YES and Fox Sports Net. But, I digress...

It seems that a new version of the software has fixed the 720p issue. It is now 1:32 PM (PDLS time), and I am watching a basketball game being recorded on 3D VOD, and my Visio 55-inch 3DTV indicates 720p SBS 3D when I press the INFO buttom on the remote control. The updated software version is 0x459 and it was downloaded on April 5, 2011.
