Have Ordered the Lynxis Wireless Adapter Suggested by Directtv, but don't understand why cannot connect directly

Question I have is this?

I have a Belkin Wireless N Router.

My laptop that I keep in my living room near my receiver is the computer controlling the router.

Why can't I simply run an ethernet cable from my directv receiver directly to my notebook to obtain internet access?

When I run the setup from my remote, it shows that the network is established, but it is not showing any internet connection.

I have tried both ethernet and HDMI cables, but setup is still saying no internet access? My computer sees the directv2pc in the network, but will not allow me to access any of the files on my DVR.
