Having Trouble Connecting to the internet via Ethernet Cable

I am trying to connect my HD DVR receiver HR24-200 to the internet so that I can get the On Demand section. My modem works properly. I have the ethernet cable plugged into a working port on the modem and to the back of the DVR in the ethernet port. When I go to Menu-Parental, Favs & Setup-System Setup-Network Setup-Connect Now, I receive the message "We were not able to connect to the internet. Would you like to get connected?". The I hit "Get Connected", go through the prompts for "Wired" connection and then "Connect Now" Then a message appears that states...

A problem was detected.

IP Address: 169.254.9.66 OK

Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 OK

Default Gateway: - -

DNS: - -

Network: Coax Connected

Internet: Not Connected (13)

Result Code: 86-976

I tried calling my internet provider and the issue is not on their end. I do not have a problem connecting my computer or tv to the modem/internet. My computer is connected wirelessly and my tv is connected through an ethernet cable. I have tried different ethernet ports on the modem and a different ethernet cable. I do not have the Wireless Connection Kit and I do not have Whole Home DVR service.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am stumped and frustrated!

The HR24's ethernet port is not enabled by default.  It's internal DECA coax network adapter is the default.  So connect the HR24 to your modem's router, then reset the HR24 using the red button behind the front panel access card.  That should force the HR24 to switch from its internal DECA coax adapter to its ethernet adapter.  You might need to repeat the Network Setup again too.

Glad to help.  Enjoy!

One of these days maybe DirecTV will follow our recommendation to put a label over the HR24's ethernet port warning folks about this.  It trips up lots of people.

Thanks for the useful thread

I have encountered the same issues, and get the same response :

IP Address: 169.254.9.66 OK

Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 OK

Default Gateway: - -

DNS: - -

Network: Coax Connected

Internet: Not Connected (13)

Result Code: 86-976

I have attempted to reset with the red button, then reconnect to the internet via the network setup selections from the menu.  I am still unable to connect to the internet.  The line info changes to this -

IP Address: 169.254.9.66 OK

Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 OK

Default Gateway: - -

DNS: - -

Network: Ethernet Connected

Internet: Not Connected (13)

Result Code: 86-976

So it is recognizing the ethernet, but not my network connection.  My connection and router are fully functioning at the moment.  I have unplugged, replugged all components, tested all connections with the HR24 box, and attempted running ethernet from both router and modem.  I'm fairly tech enabled, but this is stumping me.  I wonder if my router/modem is  not supported, or if there is something glaring you guys notice that I am doing wrong.

As a side note, I have gotten some remote control freezing and complete cable box freeze-up trying to connect through the menu network setup tab.  don't know if this is related.

Thanks!

Mick,

we will gladly try to help, but we ask folks that is best to start your own new thread using the "Create New Post" button on the main forum page. Your problem may very well be different from the original poster's. With a new thread you can provide more information about your equipment, location, and troubleshooting you've tried so far. And this forum software makes it difficult to track or respond to folks that add onto someone else's thread.

A couple of things.  Leave the router connected to your modem, the DVR needs to be connected to a router.  Secondly, if you have Whole Home, ignore this and set up a new thread as Peds suggested.  Do all steps thus:

Connect the Ethernet cable to the top or only port of the DVR and an open port on the router.  Check that the router has DHCP enabled (essential).  Do a red button (inside card door) reset of the DVR.  When it's booted up, do thus:   Menu -> .....setup -> system setup -> network setup -> restore defaults. At this point stop and go to your router and disconnect AC power for a minute and plug it back in.  When all the lights settle down, go back to the DVR and run the "connect now" command.  You should get a "connected to Internet" message. Allow 24 hours for the system to download then try downloading a concert from channel 1239 as a test.

Thanks dcd - and apologies for not starting a new thread, i'm new here!

I will go through the steps you mention.  I do have the ethernet connected to the router, I had just tried it direct to the modem to see if it would work in that manner.

I don't have the whole home system, so hopefully this will work alright.

How does one find out if there router is 'DHCP enabled'?

Thanks for the help and i'm sure the answer is in here!

You should have a setup manual for the router.  Many routers are accessed via a web page with an address of http://192.168.1.1 and use the password supplied with the router.  If you don't have your manual, do a Google of your router model and you'll find setup instructions.  On a Linksys router the DHCP setting is on the first Basic Setup page.

Note that DHCP is default on most systems, but if it is disabled, it will never do an automatic configuration, so for folks having trouble connecting, that is the first thing to check.

This worked to get me connected to the internet, but I am unable to download any programs and when I run a system test, it says I am not hooked up to the internet - although I get On Demand and Cinema info on my guide screen.  I get error code 71-73-536.  I attempted to download from channel 1239, and although it said i was downloading and the red record button on the front of the reciever came on, it never recorded and eventually a page popped up saying I wasn't able to connect to the internet.

I am probably pretty confusing in my description - but the hr24 through alot of information at me and i'm not really sure how to disseminate it.  Perhpas I am not destined for on-demand!  Any help always appreciated.

How long after you connected did you try the channel 1239 test?  The channel and program labels appear soon after connection, but all the underlying "works" takes a good day to load.  Delete the downloading program, let the system rest and give it a try tomorrow evening.

Thanks dcd

I had waiting about a day, so i thought that may be to soon so I did another reboot and tried again.  I get the connected to the internet message, but I am unable to dowload any programs - I got about 8% through on program then it disconnected.  Other programs won't even begin.

My connection is strong and I run a new pc system with good modem/router hardware.

It almost seems like the d/l is timing out, if that makes any sense....

I'm stumped!

For further clarification, I have been attempting to dowload some more programs.  Now all programs remain in my list as 'Pending Download' with no movement for well over 24 hours on them.  Any ideas?

Delete the pending downloads in their entirety.  Do not reset the system.  On the remote press and hold the info button, then select more system info.  Scroll down to Internet.  Does it indicate connected?  If not, then you have some faulty component because a hard wired Internet connection should remain connected permanently.  It could be the HD DVR, the Ethernet cable or the router itself.  Is the cable factory made or did you install the connectors yourself?  I purchased factory made 100 ft lengths and coiled the excess below the floor.   This is the source I use.

Hi DCD

Thanks for the info - I really appreciate it.

I checked my specs, it sayxs my internet is not connected ( and has a bright yellow exclamation mark at this info line as well).  It also says my 'STB Port' is N/A with the same yellow exclamation mark.  In parenthesis after the interent connection line is has the number 13.  After the STB Port' info line it has the number 202.

I am not sure what this all means!

My system is new, but my router is about a year or two old, so maybe that is the culprit.   I may be able to swip a laptop from work and hook up to the ethernet cable to see if the issue may be with the router / cable.  That may be a good test to check a couple aspects of my system, no?

Thanks guys!

The test you suggest is perfect, we frequently recommend it.  Be sure to disable WiFi on the laptopp.  The "no connectoin" on the ports is normal, they will self connect within a few days of getting the Internet connection fixed.

Just to be sure, you did go through the entire routine listed in post #7 in the order listed?
