HD channels - come and go and sometimes leave

We have fought this problem for months.  When some of the appliances in our house kick on our HD channels say they are looking for a signal.  We have tried about everything that I know to do.  Any suggestions on how to correct this issue.  If we turn the light, appliance, etc.  off then the signal will come back on.  We can watch any of them as long as I sit in the dark.  We even tried running the power cord from the tv and the receiver to other outlets, but no change.  Super frustrating.  Please help if you have any ideas.

Is this an H20-600 model?  Look for the label behind the front panel access card door.  The -600 models are junk and should be replaced.

Of course, this could also be a satellite reception problem.  Please post back with your signal readings for each satellite's transponders (and both tuners if applicable).  You'll find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" -> "System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal Strength".  Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the "Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners.

Fill in your readings for each satellite and tuner using these examples.  A properly aligned dish will show 80-90s on most of the relevant transponders (although some will be low or zero):

If your electrical system is old or badly wired, this can happen. The other equipment is causing noise on the power lines and that is probably affecting the way the LNB at the dish is powered. Anyway, let's see what your signals show.

I hoe I got what you  needed .  These are the numbers that I could find before I went to work this morning.  I will check again this evening.

Satellite transponders (32 total at 101º)

[Most of your standard definition channels are beamed from 101ºW]

1-8  97 95 96 95 95 100 95 98

9-16   95 97 97 0 96 98 95 100

17-24  95 0 97 91 96 100 97 100

25-32  96 0 97 92 98 100 96 100

If I can get all those other numbers.  I couldn't figure it out this morning.  My house is not too old to have a problem with that.  Can a loose wire at an outlet cause all of this??  We have some rentals and find that problems can come in all kinds of ways that you never think of.  If the problem was in the outlet where the things are plugged in then I would find that easy to understand.  However when we ran it to different outlets which are not on the same it still acted up.  So frustrated.

I better get to school and see if I can educate some kids.  Will check later this evening.  Thanks

Take another look at the instructions as to how to find the other satellite signal strengths:

"You'll find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" -> "System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal Strength". Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the "Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners."

make sure that you have "hide SD duplicates" on the menu and that you are connecting your receiver with HDMI

Thank you.

I am rather technically proficient. Of course I use rather good HDMI cables, and I changed them too to make sure. Also I do connect to the HD designated channels.

I do understand your questions. I am doing most computer troubleshooting for friends and I use the best  Sears Service question when customer calls for help with the broken washing machine: did you check if the machine is plugged into a working receptacle. ;-).

My installation got the new SWM switch and new distribution amplifier. DTV tech did all that after my old SWM got zapped by neighborhood lightning. The HD channels always pixelized during a rather small rain, and during a heavy rain they do not work while the SD channels work fine. But the tech looked at the Sat 101 and said that I have perfect alignment. Little I knew that HD's are on different sats.

He'll come back in a day or two to realign the dish - but I will take the ladder away and will not let him off the roof until the signal for HD sats is good. But I have no clue what good means for those. My dish is Slim-5.

Thanks for your help.

those numbers look good, although the 95's all across the 103 Ca and b looks quire suspicious.  BTW, you never answered the question about the FULL number of your H20 receiver.  if it is an H20-600, those receivers are trouble some

I looked on the receiver.  Model:   H20       MFR;  100

It doesn't have a number like you list with a dash in it.  I hope this helps.
