Joan looks fat on Mad Men

I just got a new LG 42PJ350, which is a 720P Plasma HDtv.  Recorded Mad Men and watched it.  Joan looks like a fat hog.  Draper has jowls.  I know it has something to do with the way I have the reciever/tv settings that dont agree.  The TV doesnt have a whole lot of things to set as far as upconversion settings.  In aspect ratio they have "16:9, Just Scan, Set by Program, 4:3, Zoom, and Cinema Zoom"  I try pushing the resolution button on the front of the DVR and it doest change a thing.  I am using the component ouputs instead of HDMI on the DVR because the HDMI port doesnt synch to the TV.  What order should I go in in setting these things?  I figure the TV is just asking me what to do with a signal thats not 720P.  If the DVR is putting out 720P and Mad Men is already in widescreen, where is the conflict?
