Losing Dolby Digital when I use the Pause button
When I Pause a DVR recording or live tv (HR44 0x159a 9/3/21) after 40 seconds some ads pop up. When I resume playing I have lost AC3 5.1 and only get PCM stereo. I have to change channels to get Dolby Digital surround sound back. If I power cycle just the AV receiver and re-initiate the HDMI handshake, it does nothing, still just PCM. So it's definitely the DVR getting locked into some weird low quality mode as soon as the ads pop up. I will miss having a Pause function but I guess I'll just have to stop to using it. It kills surround sound every time. And also sometimes when in this PCM audio mode the video signal is noticeably degraded too, motion appears jerky and strange as if frames are being dropped. The video is sometimes fine after resuming a Pause, but surround sound is always gone.

I have the exact same issue. This started right after a DVR firmware update last week. I have found that I can pause and as long as I resume play before their Screensaver is invoked DD comes back. Once the Screensaver kicks in audio goes to stereo...change channel, come back to original channel and DD is back. Obvious bug in the update.

Thank you both. I'm glad it's not my box going bad. It is very disappointing when an un-opt-outable feature like ad injection breaks something you pay for, like surround sound. I know that I feel TERRIBLE if I author something at work that breaks core functionality for another group. That said, at least this bug is very minor in that it's easy to avoid using Pause for a bathroom break mid-movie now that I know I will lose 5.1 surround. A few posts around to warn people is a good thing, I know I watched several shows just thinking "Wow, a lot of DirecTV channels are dropping Dolby" before figuring it out. And on the outside chance that any marketing people pay attention to this forum, guess what? I'm never using Pause again. Exit and resume from here on out. I didn't really mind the ad/screensavers but you really blew it. Alternatives to Pause are so easy, why would I ever try to change my behavior back to using it?

We have a Nakamichi soundbar and are experiencing the same problem. Had the box replaced after months of back and forth. Still happens. It finally dawned on me that it was disabling dolby in a pause when I was doing some testing using a decibel meter.
The tech that came out was not aware of this happening. Calling the support number is absolutely useless.
DirecTV needs to fix this problem immediately.
