media share doesn't work

I have an HR-24 and every time I try to use the Media share feature it never works. First let's deal with videos. No matter what I try to play it  always comes back as "cannot play video".  I checked my computer and I have windows media set up to share with every thing.
When I try to play music, the song that I select doesn't play, the song before or after it or even a song no where near the order plays. I've checked to make sure the song that I select is actually on my computer and confirm it. Yet when I select it, media share will play something else.
Media share recognizes my files, but just won't play them. What's going on.
I am running windows 7  I have windows media player 12.

Videos must be MPG2 and of a modest resolution.  Music must be UNPROTECTED MP3.

Gezz, this platform needs MPG4 while another can only work on MPEG2. Everything uses a different format, so why bother using media share? Is this just a newborn technology that DTV is toying with and haven't perfected it yet?? So I assume that Media Share isn't for watching anything but small home movies, as per your answer, it would appear that anything like a normal movie would be out of  it's power.  I wanted to use it, but not now. Thanks anyway for the info.

NO one has answered the music question. It plays the music, just not the song that is selected. All my music is unprotected. If I select let's say #3 song, it will play #4 song. All other platforms play my music library just fine, except Media share.
