New Format HDUI
I have been a loyal happy Directv customer for eleven years until I turned on the Tv with the new format. The new format is horrible. The contrast and definition is clearly inferior. I have the updated format on my Panasonic Plasma which has had an impeccable picture and contrast and definition until the format has changed. Now the picture is dark, the definition is terrible. When I pause the picture and hit the info button on the remote control, the picture color, contrast and definition change to that of the superior picture quality of the old format. It becomes a different color and the definition is enhance to that of the old format.

What new format? The H20 HD Receiver will not get any new menu/Guide format. How is the H20 connected to your HDTV? Perhaps you can post a photo of the problem?

Also, this is a customer response reply forum and is in no way connected to DIRECTV. So, you are wasting your time here. Sound like you have an equipment problem

Thanks for your response,
I have an HR20 not H 20 Model. It is connected by a gold plated HDMI cable from the receiver directly to the t.v. My blu-ray player is not having the same issue. I have connected an older model receiver to my t.v. which has the old format and there are no problems with it.

OK, thanks for clarifying that. Your original post stated that you had the H20 HD Receiver. That model will not get the new user interface. Looks like your HR20 got the new user interface and you're not happy with it. Most folks think it's an improvement, but you don't. Be sure to email your comments directly to DirecTV using the "Contact Us" link on their main web site. They won't see your comments here.
But I'm puzzled by your statement "When I pause the picture and hit the info button on the remote control, the picture color, contrast and definition change to that of the superior picture quality of the old format. It becomes a different color and the definition is enhance to that of the old format. " Can you provide a photo of what you mean here?

Ok here are the two different situations described, one photo paused and his shirt is dark with no definition. The other photo is with the same frame paused in which the info button has been pressed and his shirt all of a sudden changes color and you can see definition and contrast. Many shows are very dark and it is a bummer losing the resolution.
I have also emailed my comments to the "Contact Us" link and have received a reply from Directv basically saying thanks for the email and someone should get back to you within 24 hours.
The reason that i posted here as well is to see if anyone else may be experiencing the same and or different problems. My brother has Directv as well and has even newer receivers than I do. He has the new HDUI format uploaded and some of his HD channels revert to 480 randomally.

What brand/model HDTV do you have? Looks like your TV's video circuitry is compensating the video image when the darker INFO banner is displayed. The new user interface software should not have affected the video quality, especially when no menus are displayed. Optimal adjustment of the TV's video settings might help. But I can't think of any reason why the video quality would appear different after this recent HD user interface software update.

Hey Litzdog911,
I have a Panasonic TH-P 50 PZ750U which has had an incredible picture until the new HDUI format was loaded to my HR20 receiver. I switched out the HR20 receiver with a H20 receiver which has the old format and the picture contrast, color and definition is again much better than the new format. My blu-ray player hooked up to the Panasonic is not having any issues either.

Don't know what else to suggest. I have a slightly newer Panasonic Plasma TV and detect no difference in HD video quality between my HR20 (new GUI) and HR34 (old GUI) connected to the same HDTV via HDMI. Nothing should have changed with the satellite video quality. Only the user interface displays were changed.

Best to start your own new thread using the "Create New Post" button on the main forum page. Your problem may very well be different from the original poster's. With a new thread you can provide more information about your equipment, location, and troubleshooting you've tried so far. And this forum software makes it difficult to track or respond to folks that add onto someone else's thread.

Yeah I am at a loss too. Customer Service said the only thing they can do is have me purchase a new box. Which is quite a bummer considering I had no issues before the format change. Adjusting my t.v.'s settings is pointless, especially after switching the HR20 to the H20 with the old GUI format on my Panasonic and the picture quality, black contrast in particular is vastly improved. My wife and even my six year old notices the difference. The bells and whistles of the new format are not why I liked Directv all these years, it had been the superior picture and sound quality.

This is exactly right. Panasonic plasma TVs dynamically control the phosphor light levels when one region of the screen becomes too bright or dark in contrast to the rest of the screen. It's supposedly a protective feature, but I hate it. However, for whatever reason this doesn't occur in the "Cinema" picture mode. My suggestion is to try working with the Cinema mode ti tweak the picture to your liking. It worked out for me. But if you insist on using the other modes like Standard, Sports, Vivid, etc. you will continue to have the problem.
My guess is this has been happening all along, but the new DirecTV UI drew your attention to it. My eyes immediately recognized it though, and after some research I figured out the cause of the problem.

Excellent advice. My Panasonic Plasma is set to "Cinema Mode", so I haven't seen this issue.
