no dls to modem in living room for dvr

when i had my dvr instlalled and bought a  tv for netflix video streaming i could not get the modem in my living room to receive dsl. i tried the modem in every other room in my house with the same result.  the only place i could get dsl was in my bedroom where the computer was hooked up to this modem and received dsl, does anyone know why the telephone line works in my bedroom for dsl but no where else? .the phone company, att, wants $85 to come check the connection at the phone jack. i would appreciate any help with this. thank you
