Optical cable hookup with Bose Ext Speaker

If the only video source you use is the DirecTV box, you can hook the DirecTV box's digital audio OUT to the Bose digital audio IN. Otherwise you would generally connect the TV's digital audio OUT to the Bose.

Once connected as described above how do I get the genie remote to operate the Bose external speaker?

The Genie remote won't be able to control your Bose speaker. You'll need a fancier universal remote for that.
