Playback from Beginning Not Working
My DirecTV will not allow me to use the playback function. When I press the rewind button it goes through the motions as if it were loading the program from the start, then it goes into self-checking mode. It says it's checking the connection and other things and then simply goes back to the program in its live version.

I can understanding how annoying that is, let's address your issue!
Have you tried resetting your receiver? After doing some research, it appears some users have solved the issue by doing so.
Please try it and let us know if it fixed your issue.
