remote control via PC
My parents live in Assisted Living. I have a laptop hooked to their TV which I can access remotely and an LG app on the laptop which allows me to change ports on TV and present things to the TV from the laptop. What I can NOT do is change their Directv channels from the laptop. My father's sight is terrible and he can't really see the remote. Mom's mind doesn't function well enough to comprehend the remote. I just want to be able to assist them at a distance. Does anyone have any idea how I could control their Directv remote from the laptop that is behind their TV?

Probably not. You’d need to connect that Assisted Living receiver to the internet somehow and then get the login info for the account to control the receiver from the app. Since you want to do it remotely, you would then have to setup a virtual IP to communicate with the receiver at the assisted living. It’s definitely not worth the trouble so I’m going to tell you no.

Thank you for your honest reply. I was really hoping there was a way to remotely control the remote control itself. Guess I will have to keep researching this.

Research will do you little good unfortunately, I stated the only possible ways to do it. It’s extremely cumbersome in my opinion and isn’t worth your time since in the end it likely won’t work. Obviously, I’m not discouraging your research but I’m letting you know that it isn’t going to be ‘easy’ to do.

There is or rather there was a way to remotely control a receiver. I have a sling box that allows me to remotely view and control my receiver. Unfortunately, Sling is ending support and shutting down all their servers next month. I’m hoping I can still find a way to connect to the sling box remotely after they shut down their servers but I’m not hopeful.
