Streaming to iPad outside of home network
Hello, I have just set up my iPad app to stream my DirecTV and it works great at home, but once I connect to a different wifi network it no longer works. Can anyone explain how I can set it up so I can stream from any network? Maybe I need to forward some ports or someting.
Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but the feature currently is restricted to the same network your HD DVR is connected to. I know, that severly limits the usefulness of the feature but that's the way it is.

Can't I use a VPN or forward ports to bypass that restriction though?

This is one of those "yeah but" questions. The poster asks a question, gets an answer they don't like, so begin their response with, "yeah, but, can't I do this or that?" You can do and try whatever you like, but the system is designed to operate on the same network and sub net as the HD DVR is on. Not sure how one would configure an iPad to make it think it was home in Philadelphia (and able to "see" it's HD DVR) when it was actually in a Holiday Inn in Miami.
If you figure out how to do this, post back, I'm sure the engineers would be fascinated.

Guess Directv got wise to this path (if it ever worked). I receive an alert from the app that says I'm connected via VPN and that I need to disable VPN and connect to the same Wi-Fi network as the receivers.

I guess that you shouldn't have never posted this info on a DirecTV forums!

Well, at least I still have my SlingBox. I am going to watch the service I PAY FOR on the go whether DirecTV likes it or not!

I am pretty sure that DirecTV does not care if you use a sling box to watch their services. however, IMHO there are contractual issues that DirecTV have to follow, thus the restrictions they have in place on their iPad app.

Not sure why anyone is so upset by this. The written literature on the streaming App states exactly what I had stated in my post #2, you need to be on your home network. And, the App is free, so you're stuck with rules set by the App. Have any of you attempted to distribute purchased Apple MP3's to your friends? How does that work out? And, you paid for those.

Perhaps you should refrain from commenting about stuff that you know little or nothing about. This is precisely the purpose of VPN. If you want to be the rules and procedures guy, great. However this comment made me question your actual 'tech-know-ness' since you obviously missed a basic networking concept.

Similar comment here. Wikipedia or 'let me google that for you' would have been more useful.

I assume you meant your critique to be helpful and I thank you. I understand the concept of VPN but I also know that Directv intended this to be an "in house" application. And, based on your post #8 it appears that you had no luck convincing the iPad that you were at home.
As an aside, we see a lot of posts from folks who attempt to do something with one of the Directv devices that is not built in to that device. Quite often they are upset, and sometimes even angry (as in post #9) when their expectations or desires are not met with reality. Sometimes they feel as though they were singled out by Directv for retribution. Often they want to shoot the messenger. This covers almost ever feature of every device and goes well beyond the iPad App. Nice calm friendly posts (see #2) are often met with derision and as time passes the responses get more and more viral. Finis.
