Trying to Setup Mediashare

I have four HD-DVRs- two HR-20 700s, a HR-23 700 and a HR-24 500.  They are all networked together with Cat 6 ethernet, and Whole Home DVR and internet connectivity are functional on all of them.  I have a home computer running Windows XP with Service Pack 3 that is also connected to the network.  The cable modem, PC and one of the HR-20s connect to the network through wired ethernet ports on a wireless router and the other DVRs connect to the network through a switch that is in turn wired to the router.  I want to activate Mediashare, but I am having problems. The online directions provided by DirecTV seem to apply to an OS other than Windows XP, and I am not finding them useful. When I go to Windows Media Player (version 11), select “Library” from the dropdown menu, and then select “Media Sharing…” I can see that all four of the DVRs are selected to allow sharing. However, I don’t see any option on the DVR menu to access content from the PC. What do I need to do to activate the Mediashare feature?

You're well on your way, and you're right, the online instructions are obsolete.  It's been a while since I configured XP, so bear with me if I get the details wrong.  You need to place your media (MPG2, JPG and MP3) files in their default folders that Windows creates (my music etc).  Then, temporarily disable your firewall on the computer and do a red button reset of one of your HD DVR's.  When it boots up you should see a "Music etc" option under the "Menu" button on the DVR.  If that works for you do the other DVR's likewise.

Many of us run a third party software on their computers called TVersity.  It's a bit more flexible than Windows Media Player.  After you get a chance to play with this a bit post back and we can post the link and some comments if you'd like to give TVersity a try.

I disabled the firewall by going to "Control Panel" ---> "Security Center" and then turning the firewall off.  I then did a RBR on one of the HR-20s.  I already had content in the "My Music" and "My Pictures" folders on my PC.  After the DVR rebooted, there was no "Music etc" option available on the DVR under the "Menu" button.  Any other suggestions?

hopefully you have no other firewall running on your PC?

If you go into services on your PC, make sure Windows Media Player Network Sharing is running and also the SSDP Discovery Service.

Please forgive my computer ignorance, but how can I tell if I have another firewall running on my PC?  When I turn off Windows Firewall in Security Center using the radio button, it tells me that the firewall is turned off and that "Windows detects that your computer is not currently protected by a firewall."  How can I tell if there is another firewall that Windows is not detecting, and if there is, how do I turn it off?

When you say "go into services," what do you mean specifically?  I have enabled media sharing to all four of my HD-DVRs through the Library tab in Windows Media Player.  What is the SSDP Discovery Service, and how do I access its settings?

A persons Internet service provider often also furnishes a network security suite.  Comcast for example furnishes me a Norton suite which includes a firewall.  It's easy to have both the Norton and the Windows firewall operating at the same time.  A silly question perhaps, but you do have your computer running when you look for the "music" option?  Even on a system that is working 100% the option will disappear the moment you turn off the computer.

Sorry, I thought that I had responded to this a few days ago, but I guess not.

I'm not using a Comcast-provided Norton suite, or any other additional firewall, as far as I know.  Other than checking firewall status in Windows Security Center, I'm not sure how to verify that there are no other firewalls blocking content from Media Share.

The computer is running when I try to get Media Share working.

To bring up the services, type "Services.msc" in the run box that ciomes up when you hit the Start menu in XP.

IF you run that command you will see all the services and if they are running or not. Then you can search for the services I mentioned and see if they are running.

You can also try the program TVersity instead of WMP. There are plenty of posts here regarding that and as a bonus it will transcode videos/movies so mediashare will recognize them, as WMP will not do that for you.

I have downloaded several versions of Tversity, one at a time and uninstalled each of them as NONE of them work with the DVR HR23-700. I don't care what any of you say, it just does not and will not work at all. I cannot stream any video at all to it from my pc. I have searched and followed every direction I can find on the internet and ti just does not work. Is there any other program that will actually work or not??

I see that this is your first post to the forums.  Note that if you would like assistance it's always best to start your own fres post and give all the details.   I run TVersity version 1_7_4_1 on a daily basis and it works just fine.

Help!  My thread has been hijacked!  Seriuosly, jharbeson, believe me, I appreciate the fact that you are having problems with Media Share.  But it would make things less confusing if you would start your own thread, and when you do so fully explain your situation.

I have verified that all the services you mentioned are running.  Before I download TVersity and try to make that work, I want to at least see if I can get Media Share working with the basic configuration that I have now.  There's no sense adding something else to the mix if the feature doesn't work now.

Sorry, I did not see a selection to start a new post. Sorry to have bothered anyone  by posting in the first place. I have read hundreds of posts on here and they are all basically the same, yet no one seems to provide a working solution. So, with that said, Tversity is no longer my option as it is a true piece of **** software.

Sorry to have "Hijacked" your thread. The system did not give me the option to begin a new one. Didn't mean to step on your precious toes by making a mistake.

You might want to think about an attitude readjustment in order to garner the help you seek.  If you can't figure out how to start a new thread here, it's no wonder that you're having such problems with Media Share.  Of course, I didfigure out how to start a new thread, and I'm having Media Share problems as well, so maybe that's not the best indicator of proficiency with the Media Share feature.  Anyway, I suggest that you recage your gyro and try again, this time in your own thread.

Is the receiver you are looking at connected through your switch? I have read posts about some switches blocking UPnP traffic. Wondered if you had tried seeing of Mediashare showed up in your receiver menu, on a receiver that was directly connected to your router? For that matter is UPnP turned on, on your router?

The computer and one of the HR-20s (the receiver that I am looking at when I do the RBR) are connected directly to the router; the other DVRs are connected to a switch that is in turn connected to the router.  What is UPnP, and how can I tell if it is turned on?
