Unable to connect HD DVR to internet
I have a HR24-500 HD DVR that is hooked up via ethernet cable to my qwest modem. I do not have MRV or SWM. The firewall in the qwest modem is set to off. I have a sony blu ray that is connected to the modem via wireless connection in addition to my laptop and Iphone. All are working fine. I know the Ethernet port on the modem is also working fine as I can hook a LAN line to my laptop and get on-line.
Whenever I go through Network Setup on my DVR, it says unable to connect to the internet and the Ethernet light on the front of the modem doesn't light up. DTV referred me here, as they were unable to help me. HELP!! Thanks.

This should be easy. The Ethernet port on the HR24 comes default disabled. If you do the following, you should connect right up. The procedure covers all the bases and may seem like overkill, but it only takes a few minutes.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the top port of the DVR and an open port on the router. Check that the router has DHCP enabled (essential). Do a red button (inside card door) reset of the DVR. When it's booted up, do thus: Menu -> .....setup -> system setup -> network setup -> restore defaults. At this point stop and go to your router and disconnect AC power for a minute and plug it back in. When all the lights settle down, go back to the DVR and run the "connect now" command. You should get a "connected to Internet" message. Allow 24 hours for the system to download then try downloading a concert from channel 1239 as a test.

Spent all day reading help articles explaining crazy things that didn't work! This rectified the error I was having using my Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, like you said it's just the direct tv receiver's ethernet jack comes disabled!
Thanks!

Just so you know, we (the TKG's) suggested having a sticker added to the back of the HR24 DVR's advising re the reset but thus far no stickers.

Several hours wasted on the phone, getting a new internet adapter, etc. and after reading this I was able to get it set up in <5 minutes. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
And a special kudos to the directv phone tech who couldn't correct the issue but had the modesty to tell me that I should check out the forums because people far more knowledgeable than he post solutions on here.
A glorious end to the day.

I figured there is just some miscommunication between the DCCK and my airport express (or perhaps my HR24).
Not wanting to have another tech come out and try to fix it, I give up with the DCCK and buy and Airport Express to work as a bridge. Of course it doesn't work, and of course I didn't read this forum or even search google which would have directed me to this forum.
I relegate myself to the fact that I'll have to get someone to come out, and they unable to figure it out I'll need to buy a new airport express, and it probably won't work...so I'll just have to live with 10% at a time.
But late last night I began to search for ideas about connecting the DVR via an Ethernet cable to an airport express, which directed me to this thread:
http://forums.directv.com/message/10641320#10641320
Having done everything suggested there without success, I was fortunate to see a link to the post here by dcd (#2 above) specifically talking about Ethernet and the HR24. With that advice I am now have a successfully (and perhaps more importantly) and uninterrupted connection via my HR24 and airport express.
So after days of frustration, I sincerley thank you dcd for the excellent information (and whitebunny888 for linking to the post by dcd).

do you have WHDVR, if yes, then you success is short lived as you cannot connect anny HDDVR via direct ethernet cable as this will disable your WHDVR system. if no WHDVR, then happy downloading!

I have a HR24 the video said I need Coax cable..my kit came with both ethernet and coax. I only have one ethernet port on my DVR HD. I can get a constant Green light to my wireless but only flashing with the activity. I can not connect to the internet. DVR does not connect. Ideas?

I followed your other directions (above) and wow - I'm connected! You're the only person, including the directv youtube videos to make this work!!! Thanks!

Will dcd's response work with other receivers as well (HR21-700) for example)?

Sure, but understand that this set of instructions is meant for a non Whole Home HD DVR that is direct wired by Ethernet cable to the router.
Folks with Whole Home or wireless systems should start their own fresh thread giving the details of their setup. We have configuration instructions for each system, but they have different details and cannot be intermixed.

I have the HD24-100 and have insight broadband. Will this work for mine as well? I went through the steps on DTV's website to go in through the menu, had everything connected and even tried it again this afternoon at lunch, but still won't connect. Does this work for the 24-100 as well or is just a certain receiver? I do not have WHDVR, just HDDVR.
Thanks
