What good is DirecTV2PC?

My network:

4 pc's, 3 wired desktops, 1 wireless laptop,

all are running Windows XP Pro, at Service Pack 2 (Too many issues with SP3)

Do not want Vista or Windows 7 -

(1) wireless printer,

(1) Directv HD DVR model HR23/700. Not Whole Home. Only 1 TV set.

My router:

Westell model A90-750044-07 supplied by Frontier Communications as part of their DSL service.

Has wireless capablity and wired Ethernet ports.

All connected equipment operates at 100 MB/Sec.

DVR:

Physical connection is from top ethernet port on DVR to the router.

1. Holding the "INFO" button down, goes to "Info &Test" screen.

2. Selecting "More System Info" goes to list of stuff.

3. Scrolling down to "Network, sub item "Network" shows "Connected",

sub item "Internet" shows "Connected"

Problems:

1. Installed DirecTV2PC on laptop

2. Laptop displays the VCR's playlist.

3. When selecting a program to watch on the laptop,

DirecTV2PC says "cannot display this video because your graphics card

does not currently support screen capture protection for protected content.

Try updating your graphics card driver or modify your driver settings"

4. There are NO updates available for my laptop's graphics driver.

It's an ATI MOBILITY/RADEON 9000, built into the laptops motherboard.

It has the latest driver, dated 11/10/2005.

5. So - I cannot run DirecTV2PC on the laptop.

Next:

1. Installed the program on one desktop.

2. Upgraded video card driver on that machine.

3. Machine displays the VCR's playlist.

4. Program begins to launch selected video.

5. Video feed updates VERY slowly.

6. Audio feed is choppy and not understandable.

7. So - I cannot run DirecTV2PC on the desktop, either.

Also, attempted to install on another desktop.

got the same complaint about the video, and I just

don't want to buy another video card.

What good is this program?

If neither pc is working, there might be something wrong with the router.  Especially since the video feed is choppy.

I would trade it out for another router and see if there is a difference.

This program requires a hard wired network from DVR to router to computer.  Then it requires a computer that is HDCP compliant, has a substantial video card and memory and a good processor.

Lots of older computers are not capable and even more laptops.  For example, when the latest driver that is available is dated 2005, when was the first driver available?  I'd say as a general rule, most computers that are more than say 6 or 8 years old aren't capable of handling the high demands of streaming HD content properly.

This may be your specific problem but it's someplace to look.

What a shame. I suppose that DirecTV has no motivation to patch or repair this product, since it's free.

Playing my recorded programs on a networked (or wireless) PC shouldn't be rocket science.

I have spent way too much time and money on this.

For me, it's useless.
