Yes, @gzfycw01. The Gemini device works with an HR54 server and has the Genie user interface. You can access pre-downloaded apps in the guide and download up to 7,000 more from the Google Play Store. However, if you want to use an app externally, you'll need to change the input to your TV's apps. John, DIRECTV Community Team

The Gemini does work with the 3rd generation Genie (HR54). It functions as a Client just like a Mini Genie.
It also has an option to co-locate with the HR54. Nice option for single TV homes that want to watch the few 4K channels DirecTV has. The HR54 was too far into production when 4K requirements updated which is why Clients are the option for 4K.
Gemini function in a similar purpose to a dedicated streaming box (Roku, Firestick, etc.). So yes you can download apps to it. This is designed to be both a satellite client box and a streaming box in one (hence why I believe they nicknamed it the Gemini for that dual purpose).
You get the apps through the app store in the box. If you want to use an app not there, then you will need to use a different streaming device. It wasn't built to load apps not vetted through the in-device store.
