How do you watch HBO max..it says it's free
I can only watch what is showing at the time..I want to watch both episodes of the new (Edited per community guidelines) and the city show..

HBO Max isn't the same as the HBO channel. HBO Max requires an app to view its shows. Some DirecTV channel packages include HBO Max along with the HBO channels. What channel package do you have?

If you have HBO through Directv, that should include access to HBO Max. You need the HBOMax app on a streaming device or smart tv. You should be able to log into HBO Max using your Directv credentials.

If you have a DIRECTV package and HBO is paid for (or you have the Premier package) then HBO MAX should definitely work on a phone, laptop, smart TV, firestick, roku, etc. Once HBO MAX is installed on the specific device, be sure to sign in using TV Provider and DIRECTV rather than just attempting to sign in as if you subscribed to HBO MAX individually.
